Day 330 - Emily texted last night to tell us she’d accepted a good job offer in Tokyo. She will graduate university at the end of May and start work on July 1st, a Monday. Our daughter will have exactly one month to say goodbye to America and ただいま to Japan. Yumiko and Emily will likely fly out together, parting ways at the airport in Tokyo, where Emily will set out alone to create a new life for herself in one of humanity’s great urban metropolis, while Yumiko retreats back on the speeding Bullet Train to the place where her family has lived for over 400 years. The young go forward into tomorrow, while the old keep the hearth burning from yesterday. I will be left alone with the dogs to tie up our many America loose ends, before I too will go, this time forever—never again will I call America home. Maybe Emily will someday come back to the USA to live again. Maybe she’ll even choose to raise her family here. And maybe then, Yumiko and I will return to America as tourists, with cameras and yen to convert and spend. And Emily might take us to In-N-Out for burgers, or the local beach for a walk on the sand; and maybe I’ll gaze up at lifeguard tower 18 as we stroll past, and perhaps wade out to my knees into the cold sea, as I remember, and look out across the horizon to somewhere very far away. #GoingAlone #GreatLifeAdventure ☀️ THE GOOD LIFE CREED ☀️ The Good Life Meditation serves as a daily compass, orienting me towards personal objectives and principles essential for a purposeful existence within an indifferent universe. Day 350 - It’s the last day of the year, and Yumiko and I agree that tomorrow is the beginning of the end of our lives here in the USA. This is because after the new year begins, our sense will be that we need to make it all happen, we need to be gone from America, before the next new year arrives. And that’s a lot to do. We are fully dug into the USA now. This place is home in every way. And we need to dismantle not just our possessions, jobs, connections and habits; but also find our way 5,600 miles across the ocean to establish everything all over again from scratch. Honestly, part of me thinks we can’t possibly do all of this in a single year, and I might still be here alone next year at new year. And that’s alright too. It’s OK if this process takes more than a full year to complete. It’s not like we need to be anywhere at this time in our lives. But we are going to try. And it all begins in earnest tonight after midnight. The biggest year of our lives is about to begin! #GoingAlone #GreatLifeAdventure ☀️ THE GOOD LIFE CREED ☀️ The Good Life Meditation serves as a daily compass, orienting me towards personal objectives and principles essential for a purposeful existence within an indifferent universe. IT'S YOUR JOURNEY Traditionally, a journey was a rhythm of three forces: time, self and space … The greed for destination obliterates the journey … When you regain a sense of your life as a journey of discovery, you return to a rhythm of yourself. When you take time to travel with reverence, a richer life unfolds before you.* John O’Donohue It’s so easy to belittle and resent the things we’re good at. We think, ‘since I’m good at it, it just must be something everyone is good at, so it’s not worth much’ or, ‘I’m good at this but it’s not as valuable as being good at THAT’. Gabe Anderson You are made for discovery with reverence – A part of what you are discovering, not apart from it, And whilst life is limited to discovering only a portion of all that is, Yet this will help you not to be lost in space, to know yourself, and be at peace with time and what may be achieved over a lifetime rather than immediately or sooner. *John O’Donohue’s Divine Beauty; **Gabe Anderson’s blog: Things You’re Good At.
