True innovation lies not just in creating new technology but in reinventing it to deliver impactful solutions! Our journey began with the foundational hanging-drop cell culture technique published by Ross Granville Harrison in 1907. He tried to avoid cell-surface contacts for a more phenotypic culture for neurons. Recognizing its potential, we have transformed this century-old method into a robust solution compatible with modern automation when we started InSphero . Harrison's approach relied on pipetting single drops on a glass slide and then carefully turning it upside down to create hanging drops -- a technique that is still used today in some labs. Way back, Wolfgang, Jens and I added two cool innovations to this technology to create the Akura PLUS Hanging Drop system (or previously, GravityPlus plate): 💡  Top loading of cell suspensions: Designed for compatibility with multichannel pipettes and liquid-handling robots,40µl hanging drops can be generated efficiently and scalabliy without flipping the plate. 💡  Spring-loaded well design: Our compliant wells create a tight seal between pipette tip and well inlet, so that the plate is adapting to the exact pipette position along the z axis. As a result, every 3D microtissue has the same size. These innovations enable the formation of scaffold-free spheroids and organoids with unprecedented precision and consistency.
