TRIBAL LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT DOs & DON’Ts: DON'T focus acknowledgement on only one federally-recognized Tribe... Be sure to research and consider all the ancestral nations (not just federally-recognized tribes) of people with ties to your location... HOW? Use this open-source mapping platform provided by Native Land Digital Atlas at: www.native-land.ca Use it to identify all the different peoples with ancestral histories at your location. Click on the location, and it will give you a starting list of who those people are... NEXT STEP: Identify where those people are today... Are some incorporated within an officially recognized tribe? Are many of them spread throughout an entire region? Are some of them a very long way away, perhaps through forced migration, termination, removal, or relocation? TRIBAL LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT DOs & DON’Ts: DON'T: Focus a land acknowledgement on just one Tribe. Often, many different tribes, peoples, clans, bands, and other groups--both federally-recognized and not, have significant ancestral histories with a place. Also, don't overlook tribes who may have been removed from the locations of their ancestry through removal, termination, forced assimilation, and worse. For example, if you're working with Tribes in the place called Oklahoma, most of them aren't originally from there. The story is a tough one, but it points to locations far away, which we will want to know. Whatever location you're focused on, there's a profound tool to begin identifying these special groups of peple: The Native Land Digital Atlas. It was published for just this purpose. The right to a home. The right to a title deed. The right to a loan. None of these is available to most Dalits in Punjab, a state where a third of the population is Dalit. Despite a 52-year-old law that limits the size of land holdings, upper castes corner land and loans. A Dalit freedom march, part of a larger 10-year-old movement, is winding its way through 300 villages in the state’s Malwa region, informing Dalits what they must do to emulate success stories that have delivered rights—after a bloody, difficult battle against the police and upper castes—to till the land, in so doing ensuring freedom for women to work in the fields or factories, keep cattle and join the movement for equality.  #India #Punjab #Dalits #rights #LandForAll #RightToLand #DalitRights #DalitFreedomMarch #article14live https://lnkd.in/dED3yC4J
