As someone who’s worked in marketing and events for… well…. a very long time, it is always a total treat to be on the other side. Last week I had the total pleasure of being a delegate at the inaugural Partner Conference for an incredible product business. This event was the first of its type for this business and they’ve started to engage their Channel in new ways to help support future growth. I’m super excited to be a part of the future partnership here. This served as a great reminder of the power of events. Here are just a few reasons why they’re soooo valuable… ⚡️ Communicate several messages at once to a highly targeted audience ⚡️ Facilitate the deepening of relationships ⚡️ Instigate feedback and collect research and gather insights ⚡️ Create on the spot action plans to move things forward (for example there are a few immediate things I’ll be working on next week as a direct result of this event. All of these ‘things’ will help generate future revenue.) Not to mention, events are a huge content generating activity too. UGC as well as original content that the host can use in their own marketing efforts. No matter what your business is or does, there is always a place for events in the marketing mix. The trick? Doing these for a reason, not just because. This one was a great example of a how to deliver an inaugural event, create buzz, and importantly, meet others and instigate action. 🔥 I have good news for you AND some bad news for you. The good news: Creating content is great for your personal brand. The bad news: Posting that content is not enough to drive sales. Why? If you’re only relying on short or long-form content, you're missing out on a massive opportunity to really connect with your audience. If people are going to decide to hand you money for your services, they need to get to know you first. The fastest way to do that is to get them into an event. My go-to event that I recommend most is a multi-day challenge. I love the multi-day format because it allows information to really get into participants' heads as they have the space to process it between sessions. I also love challenges with only a handful of participants, so I'm not just chatting at my audience with information. Instead, I'm getting down in the mud with them—customizing the information based on who they are and where they want to go with their endeavors. I know that running an event, especially a multi-day event, is scary. But I ask you to push past the fear because you will quickly know if your brand is on point, if your niche of genius is clear, and if you are attracting your ideal clients through these two things. Marketing inertia is wasting time, money, and energy. Just because some wear Christmas jumpers doesn't make them a good sartorial choice. Just because some retailers sell this abomination in the first week of October doesn't make it right. So why do law firms and accountants still do the same promotional activity each year leading to the same results? 🏌♂️ Hosting golf days attended by largely stale, pale and middle-aged males 🍾 Attendance at generic networking events attended by competitors and life coaches, not clients and targets 🗞️ Turgid newsletters which are focussed on internal promotions and events, not clients 🎤 Boring text heavy talks that don't engage the audience There are a multitude of better ways to build visiblity and attract new business, e.g., guesting on third party podcasts, engaging workshops, client sector focussed events, creating video content, 'Do It Yourself' informal and inclusive networking events, human Linkedin blogs, etc. Be human. Something I bet you'll all be hearing a lot about this month is budgets 💰 “Sorry, we have to cut this year's budget, but we need more attendees and better quality ones too” Every year, I knew there would be a strong chance I'd hear this (when I used to organise events). ⬆ targets ⬆ expectations But….. ⬇ resources ⬇ budget It was SO frustrating! All the work that goes into understanding customers, and then crafting and presenting the strategy. And then, just before implementing your plan, you hear that you’re not getting the budget 🤯 So you decide to pick yourself up and whatever it takes, you’re going to show your team, and your leadership, that you’re smart, adaptable and resilient. Here are just a few practical ideas that I’ve seen work for event marketers: 1) Partnership opportunities. I’m not talking about your standard sponsorship and media contra deals. Identify the media businesses, industry creators, thought-leaders, consultancies and even other event organisers you admire. Build a partnership where you both benefit and make it happen. 2) Rewarding loyalty. Acknowledge repeat attendees, and reward them with special status like priority access, priority seating and exclusive lunch areas. Then get them involved in specially branded pre-event social campaigns, sharing promo in their networks and build the FOMO. Don’t forget to encourage them to create their own content onsite and share post-event too. 3) Maximising contra deals. Most marketers have contra deals in place. Review your current media outlets, publications, industry bodies and thought leaders. Make sure you shortlist those that are most highly respected by your attendees. Obvious? Yes, but I’ve seen a lot of rolling over of contra deals for no good reason. Choose only the best, then double down and make it work. 4) Community marketing. Word of mouth WORKS and it can be one of the most effective marketing channels in terms of $$$$ and results. The people already participating in your event, think speakers, attendees and exhibitors, are your BEST marketers, so make it easy for them to promote.
