August is National Civic Health Month. The National Civic League has created a civic health index that includes seven components of community-based civic capital: engaged residents, inclusive community leadership, collaborative institutions, embracing diversity and equity, authentic communication, a culture of engagement, and shared vision and values. Here in Arkansas, it is in our best interests, and in the best interests of our children and grandchildren, that we elect leaders who make it their mission to create and sustain civic health infrastructure that empowers the citizens of Arkansas to build livable communities where we all can thrive together. Read the 2023 Arkansas Civic Health Index, that I co-authored, to find out what our elected officials should be thinking about to improve our state's civic health: https://lnkd.in/gqaPARWU

August is Civic Health Month, a nationwide celebration held to showcase the strengthening relationship between health care, healthy communities, and civic participation. Civic health refers to how communities come together to identify and address public issues, as defined by the National Conference on Citizenship. It is measured through social connections, community involvement, and political participation. The Wisconsin 2024 Civic Health Challenge encourages residents to actively contribute to their community's civic health through daily challenges centered on four themes: social connection, community connection, voting, and political engagement. https://lnkd.in/gSJ4KSrW

Today we celebrate Juneteenth—a day of freedom, resilience and unity while honoring history, embracing progress and celebrating liberation. This is also a day of education, reflection and a reminder of the work there is to do toward achieving racial equality and ending systemic racism. At Meritain Health, we’re continuing to work to address health disparities in the Black community by providing easier access to care, lower cost of care and 24-hour support—today and everyday. https://lnkd.in/gUPqgCjZ

300 Voices isn't just a campaign; it's a movement to empower and mobilize the communities we serve in Greater Bridgeport, Greater New Haven, and Greater Hartford. Through direct engagement in 1:1 interviews and focus groups, 300 Voices seeks to: ✊🏽 Understand the primary concerns of our people. ✊🏽 Identify barriers that limit voting and fuller participation in civic life. ✊🏽 Directly influence the demands we place on our elected leaders. Each response helps build a robust foundation for our advocacy, informing our strategy and priorities for 2024 and beyond. This is how we bring about substantial, lasting change—by ensuring the voices of our communities guide every step we take. Our journey is fueled by faith and a steadfast commitment to justice. Enthusiastic and highly driven communications lead specializing in tech for good, community building, and thought leadership.
Last weekend, I had the privilege of attending a conference in Estonia, where we spoke extensively about the intersection of community, advocacy, and art. The phenomenal conference solidified my belief in the power of intertwining art in the points we are trying to make and the stories we are trying to tell. Art, in its diverse forms – visual, literary, or auditory – acts as a universal language that bridges the gap between diverse perspectives and experiences. While on LinkedIn, we often categorize our interactions through a strict professional lens of boss/employee or customer/provider, there is a lot of potential when we view our shared humanity and perspective through the prism of art. Imagine a world where art is not just an afterthought but a pivotal element in shaping our professional narratives and strategies. This approach doesn't just add depth to our work; it fosters a culture of empathy, innovation, and connectedness. The idea might seem out there for LinkedIn, but if you look at people like Dr. Joy Buolamwini, who captured global attention through her poem on misgendering AIs, or organizations like Information is Beautiful that takes something as nerdy as billions of data points and turns it into art that tells a story, you can see it really does work.
Turning research into tangible impact is at the heart of our mission at the Algorithmic Justice League, as highlighted by Dr. Joy Buolamwini's words at her recent keynote speech at SXSW 2024. From advocacy that voices the concerns of the underrepresented to art that captivates and educates, our efforts are designed to bridge the gap between academic research and real-world applications. The Trust for Civic Life and $8 million to fund civic participation in rural communities are examples of what philanthropy can accomplish when funders work together. That was the goal when Stephen Heinz, president of Rockefeller Brothers Fund, asked Carnegie Corporation of New York to join a funder collaborative a year ago, resulting in an early commitment of $3.5 million from the foundation. Today the collaborative has 15 funders. The Trust’s work is grounded in research that was funded by philanthropy and conducted by the American Academy of Arts & Sciences. Its report titled "Our Common Purpose" made a strong impression. It provides pragmatic, nonpartisan approaches to countering mistrust and division in our society. A second round of grants to support civic entrepreneurs is planned for later this year, and if all goes as planned, the collaborative will invest $50 million over the next five years. https://lnkd.in/ebyPnCVt
We are proud to support a new grantmaking collaborative investing in local communities as a path to a healthier democracy. Today, the Trust for Civic Life awarded $8 million to 20 “civic hubs,” local groups in rural communities that are tackling important regional issues, bridging differences, and drawing residents back into civic life in creative ways.
