As we enter a new review of the curriculum in England, there is an opportunity to examine the structure and learning philosophy of the current curriculum to better support young people in navigating the nexus between oceans and climate. 🌊 The ocean covers 70% of the world’s surface. 🌊 The ocean currently absorbs 40% of the carbon emissions from human activities, 🌊 The ocean has absorbed 90% of the excess heat caused by human carbon emissions. 🌊 The ocean stores 60 times more carbon than the atmosphere and 16 times more carbon than the terrestrial biosphere. Next up in our profile series is Freya Buckley - Postgraduate Earth Fellow: Cultural and environmental adaptations to new seasons Freya is a Film Studies MSc student at The University of Edinburgh, with an undergraduate degree in English Literature from the University of Oxford. As part of the 'Cultural and environmental adaptations to new seasons project', Freya is helping to produce a literature review on seasons and sustainability, as well as establishing a network of people interested in this area of climate change knowledge. Out of work, Freya follows a vegan lifestyle for environmental and ethical reasons and is a member of Surfers Against Sewage. QN: What is your background and how do you think it will help you in your work as an Earth Fellow? While my academic background in the arts may not initially seem related to the role of Earth fellow, I am excited to bring an interdisciplinary approach to my work; especially since I am interested in finding creative ways to engage with issues of sustainability and the climate. As a long-time supporter of Whale and Dolphin Conservation and Surfer’s Against Sewage, I bring a genuine passion for environmental conservation to my role which I hope will shine through. QN: What is your project at the Edinburgh Earth Initiative about, and what is your role within it? The 'Cultural and environmental adaptations to new seasons' project aims to explore how seasons are changing as a result of Climate Change and the wider implications and effects this is having on sustainability and life more broadly. I am helping to produce a literature review on seasons and sustainability, as well as establishing a network of people interested in the seasons and seasonality. 🌱 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐄𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡 𝐍𝐚𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 🌱 In the first year of the 𝐍𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐄𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐍𝐚𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐏𝐚𝐫𝐤, led by the Natural History Museum in collaboration with the Royal Horticultural Society and others, young people across England have been leading the way in reconnecting with nature - both for themselves and the planet. Through hands-on projects, 𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫 3,000 𝐬𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐨𝐥𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐧𝐮𝐫𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐬 have turned grey spaces into green (1,343 𝘩𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘴 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘸𝘪𝘭𝘥𝘭𝘪𝘧𝘦 𝘩𝘢𝘷𝘦 𝘣𝘦𝘦𝘯 𝘤𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘥!), transforming playgrounds, creating habitats, and fostering biodiversity. From mapping habitats (>2 𝘮𝘪𝘭𝘭𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘏𝘢!) to building pollinator-friendly green walls (109% 𝘪𝘯𝘤𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘴𝘦 𝘪𝘯 𝘱𝘰𝘭𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘪𝘯𝘴𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘴...𝘸𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦 𝘧𝘭𝘰𝘸𝘦𝘳𝘴 𝘩𝘢𝘷𝘦 𝘣𝘦𝘦𝘯 𝘪𝘯𝘵𝘳𝘰𝘥𝘶𝘤𝘦𝘥! 💐), students have shown that small actions can create big impacts. How do you introduce yourself? I came across Daniel Priestley’s framework for self-introductions—Name. Same. Fame. Aim. Game—and here’s my take: ✅ Name: I’m Keun Park, an urban forestry professor at UBC. ✅ Same: “Dr. Urban Park.” Think of my work as designing parks for people and the environment. I study how urban nature shapes cities and enhances well-being and equity. ✅ Aim: At under_lab (Urban Nature Design Research Lab), my team of four PhD students and an incoming master’s student explores urban green/blue space accessibility, human-nature interactions, and health equity—all with the goal of turning research into real-world impact. ✅ Game: My long-term vision is to ensure urban parks are seen not just as green spaces but as critical infrastructure for public health, social equity, and climate resilience. Based in the University of Galway this week and next - anyone interested in all things geospatial keen to catch up? My research primarily focuses on: 1. how people use and understand geographic information and systems incorporating usability, geovisualization, and public participation GIS and 2. understanding GIS pedagogy and capability building. I'm also speaking at the Ryan Institute on Thursday 30 May from 3-4pm in NCBES Room 214, Orbsen Building, University of Galway - talk abstract and title below. Talk Researching the Wairarapa - from community engagement and Virtual Reality to Cultural Ecosystems Services 90% of wetlands in Aotearoa New Zealand have been lost. The role of these marginal spaces in flood mitigation, nutrient runoff filtration, and biodiversity is increasingly recognised. Ecosystem service modelling (ESS) aims to capture, visualize and analyse different benefits humans derive from the ecosystem. Modelling physical and biological processes is comparatively well studied through data-driven approaches to ESS and has been incorporated into existing ESS software (e.g. LUCI). However, the cultural values (e.g. recreation, food gathering) placed on these connector landscapes are more difficult to quantify. This talk will explore a series of completed and ongoing projects around wetland research by the SpatialThink Lab at Te Herenga Waka Victoria University of Wellington.
