I empower business owners to Jumpstart Growth. Former Merrill Lynch, E*TRADE executive.

30 years ago, my company’s new CEO delivered an unforgettable message. “I’m seeing people feeling sorry for themselves. If you don’t want to be a part of the greatest turnaround ever, that’s the door. If you do, get in the boat and start rowing.” Said the WEST POINT graduate. ▶ Over the next year, “Chainsaw” Al Dunlap unended the sleepy company Two-thirds of Scott Paper Company’s staff left. Everyone remaining moved. More new products were launched than in the previous decade. Profits and share prices skyrocketed. Was this a bad experience or a good experience? My answer is yes. ▶ To reinvent the company, he had to get ideas from us • Aloe • Baking soda • New packaging • Wet wipes for adults • More (or fewer) sheets on a roll ▶ He took them all This signaled to everyone that Scott Paper Company was no longer a sleepy, slow-moving company. To employees, to Wall Street, to competitors. Over the course of the next year, Dunlap claimed to have launched 107 new products. Yes, some of them only had a new wrapper. But if you returned to an American supermarket after a year abroad, you'd notice stark changes. Scott Paper Company was "reborn." ▶ Lots of mistakes were made Many were simply window dressing, for personal convenience or out of spite. Shrinking the number of sheets on a paper towel roll so we could claim “single, double, triple” rolls. Moving the headquarters from Philadelphia to Boca Raton (Dunlap lived in Boca Raton). Moving the remaining Philadelphia office to 400 yards across the Delaware State border. Just to give the finger to the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. ▶ I learned a HUGE life lesson The connection between you and your company can dissolve in an instant. Over time, your value inevitably becomes more company-specific. Your family grows deep roots. It feels impossible to move. Be open to moving. Stay nimble. Learn new skills. Build new relationships. ▶ Scott Paper Company was my first Growth Jumpstart experience Lots of lessons of what to do. • Get ideas from your team • Demonstrate immediate progress • Be objective when making decisions Lots of lessons of what not to do. But that’s for another day.

Kyle, Great recount of what we experienced during the Al Dunlap years!!! Even better to see it as a learning so many years after…

I was there and he destroyed the company for his and a few other people’s benefit.

I Remember an incredible speech at the canteen where he announced the firing of most of the employees and the people were applauding!
