Looking forward to seeing lots of colleagues and also new faces in vibrant NYC this week. Thanks to HolonIQ for curating yet another world-class summit. Trying to reflect how is this back-to-school, different from previous ones? - This will be the first year that GenAI production-ready initiatives land into administrators, educators, and students’ hands with certain scale. Last year could be considered a year of pilots and early validation. This year there will be an interesting mix of solutions powered and anchored around AI both for K12 and HED environments. Despite the fact marketing around AI in Edu seems to still be a little ahead of actual proven learning applications. - More evidence, efficacy, and impact-focused procurement. With Covid recovery funds drying up worldwide (not only ESSER funds in the US but also NextGeneration in the EU, among others) there are several examples of increased scrutiny around evidence of learning impact and outcomes. Good for users and challenging for the forecasts of B2B initiatives, especially the ones serving public schools and universities. - Increased energy around M&A and consolidation in the edtech space. The prospects of reduced interest rates will continue to fuel the appetite for edtech consolidation in mature segments. In a couple of quarters, we will also know whether the worst for edtech startup funding is behind us. There are already early positive signals mostly for early-stage initiatives with strong AI components. - Regulation will continue to influence heavily certain markets. There are several angles and examples here. South Korea with its AI-based digital textbooks for all, and not without strong controversy. EU constraints and lawsuits around LLM and IP ownership. Also in Europe, the 2025 Accessibility Act will impact any edtech and publisher serving users digitally, especially through multimedia channels. Not to mention the more granular ban on mobile devices in certain regions, districts, and chains of schools. Also new and exciting for me this back-to-school, my daughter starts Year 8 on Monday! But what about #followership? Both are vital skills for #success. Following means supporting a shared #vision, not just passive compliance. It's rolling up sleeves to help #leaders succeed. 💪 But how often do we discuss this equally important job? 🤔 A leader without followers is just a person alone in a room. 🚶 And true #partnerships emerge when we understand each perspective. We must value not just those at the helm, but the hands that help steer the ship. 🤝 Has our focus on producing leaders left some unable to follow well? We accomplish more #together than apart. The next time you are offered a leadership position, reflect also on how you'll empower others to lead in turn. 🙏 Being a great follower makes you a better leader. Where were you when....? In my dorm room at the University of Connecticut getting ready to grab lunch before my next class and watching the Challenger shuttle launch on TV.....I will never forget that moment of shock! Now 38 years later.....after nearly 35 years of Leadership experience this reflective article on insights and learning goes right to the heart of much of my practice with Client Partners. Decision-Making is a skill.....Decisiveness is a behavior. The Challenger launch suffered from a lack of appropriate decision-making when faced with risks that were as Jeff Bezos would say today were a "1-way door" decision....you could not come back if you were wrong (as compared to a 2-way door decision which is less consequential). Safety FIRST......Listen to your Experts (and be thoughtful and methodical about the RISKS they surface; don't just buy-in OR overrule).......BE WARY of GROUP THINK!!! Catching up with Hannah Ashford making waves in the #space industry was a breath of fresh air. We dived deep into the space industry evolution and latest news. Like a compass she pointed me towards key companies like Axiom and The Exploration Company and places like International Space University for acquiring further knowledge and to deepen my references. It's amazing how old contacts can light up new paths of learning. I commend people who open more doors for others from the bottom of my heart. Sending the elevator back down is the right way to approach any industry or any passion really. Seeing Hannah's passion in action with The Karman Project is super inspiring, the energy reminds me of some of the NGO work I had done in the past with Magna Carta. Non-profits have plenty of challenges but we often underestimate their impact in the world. If you are curious about space, she's a treasure trove of insights.
