Interesting analysis on the sports media rights climate. It's a challenging time for tier 2 or 3 rights holders with limited linear windows, a declining regional cable market, and streamers becoming more data savvy. A bearish market looms for the majority of rights holders. #SportsMedia #MediaRights

🚨 Breaking News: ESPN and Fox Sports Joint Streaming Service Halted by US Judge 🏛️ In a surprising turn of events, a US judge has temporarily blocked the launch of the highly anticipated "ESPN+ and Fox Sports App Bundle" due to antitrust concerns raised by the Department of Justice and state attorneys general. 📜⚖️ The joint venture aimed to provide sports enthusiasts with a one-stop-shop for live games, news, and analysis. However, the lawsuit argues that the combined service would stifle competition and limit consumer access to sports content. 🚫🏀🏈⚾️ US District Judge Virginia Kendall's preliminary injunction puts the brakes on the service's launch until the legal battle is resolved. The ruling suggests that the DOJ and state attorneys general have a strong case against the sports media giants. 👨⚖️👩⚖️ What do you think about this development? Will this decision ultimately benefit consumers, or is it a hindrance to innovation in the sports streaming market? Have you been part of the new WNBA hype train? Dez SVP Michael Bova certainly has. And now he’s looking at the $$$ behind the excitement. “The heightened attention on women’s college basketball and now WNBA enthusiasm is starting to show significant financial returns. As part of the NBA’s new blockbuster $75 billion media rights deal, the WNBA is reportedly set to receive $2.2 billion during that same 11-year timeframe. While the disparity between those two numbers remains large, this will quadruple the $50 million a year that the league currently receives, with reports that the WNBA expects to sell two other rights packages that will bring in an additional $60 million annually – bringing the total to roughly $260 million a year. These developments are a testament to the great work the league and the players have done to attract a whole new audience, but they also again highlight the high price that cable providers and streaming services are putting on any live sports they can get their hands on. And while you are likely tired of me talking about this, until we get a streaming service that lets you just watch your favorite sports teams, this will be the last bulwark against full-on chord cutting.” https://lnkd.in/eergKdKE

The ongoing customer attrition occurring within the pay TV ecosystem has yet to negatively influence national sports media rights negotiations. The National Basketball Association (NBA) (and WNBA (Women's National Basketball Association)), NASCAR, and the College Football Playoff all received new deals with large average annual value increases in recent months. While tier one media partners have paid up to date (save WBD with the NBA), the expectation is growing rights fee obligations will eventually break a model already under pressure and force at least some to consolidate. “There is going to be a lot of M&A,” Patrick Crakes said. “If federal government regulatory authorities become more accepting to it, you could see there being only two or three established media companies when all is said and done.” If that ends up being the case, there will likely be fewer bidders competing for rights during the ‘next’ negotiation cycle. It’s logical to wonder how that might impact future league deals—and by proxy their teams’ revenue models and valuations. #sports #sportsbiz #media #consolidation #investment #TV #streaming cc: JohnWallStreet Jacie Brandes Ryan Dastrup, PhD Randall Friedman https://lnkd.in/eDEih2dk

A rare Monday edition of the newsletter, in which we tackle the biggest question in media: When are sports leagues and TV networks going to make it easier (or cheaper) to watch games? And who is going to make the first move? Watching sports has grown more complicated in recent years as leagues have increased their fees and new players have begun to vie for media rights. The NFL has divvied its rights among five companies, while the NBA has two national broadcasters, dozens of options for local sports fans and a specialty service for out-of-market games. The NBA is about to award a national package of games to at least one new company so that it can make even more money. All of this is great for the leagues, but less good for their fans. It's also getting very expensive for media companies. (A new joint venture between three media giants doesn't solve the problem.) How would you fix this? https://lnkd.in/gW-dJvCj
