Let's take the example of a candle snuffer. This device, with its straightforward yet ingenious design, serves to automatically extinguish a candle either at a preset time or if someone forgets to blow it out. The candle snuffer operates on basic mechanical principles, yet it effectively addresses a common problem: the risk of a fire if a candle burns unattended. Its simplicity lies in its mechanical design, which can be a small bell-shaped tool at the end of a pivot or a more complex timer-based mechanism. This tool's design brilliance lies in how it uses fundamental physics — such as gravity and levers — to perform a critical function reliably and efficiently. In systems engineering, this example underscores the value of simple solutions to potentially complex problems. It reminds us that effective system design doesn't always need to be intricate or laden with advanced technology. Sometimes, the most efficient solutions are those that use basic principles to achieve their goals with minimal complexity. This brings us to a larger question: What other simple yet effective systems have you come across in your professional experience, especially in aerospace or systems engineering?

Over the years I’ve come across a number of people who have asked me “What does a Mechanical Engineer actually do?” Some are considering studying it. Some are just curious. In it’s most essential sense, I define Mechanical Engineering to be the practice of applying known principles of physics and material properties to create design specifications for structures and systems of structures to be built to perform desired functions. It is the craft of harnessing what is provided in nature to reliably produce a certain outcome according to both our desires and nature’s rules.
