Office with scrapwood paneling, built-in cabinets and sliding doors, 1998. This space is one of the first complete interior design projects where we designed and realized both the space and the furniture. A philosophy teacher from whom Piet Hein Eek still had lessons when he was 17 commissioned him to furnish his office in 1998. He asked Eek to create an environment that was at the same time personal and professional. The teacher taught "socratic conversations" and wanted his clients to be surprised and inspired, but at the same time still feel at ease. The client asked for a classic room en suite. One room to work in and the other for conversations and discussions with his clients. Eek did not initially feel in favor of this, believing that such a solution should be part of the architecture. However, it soon became clear that the teacher needed a lot of space for his books, and the idea arose to create a wall of bookcases with sliding doors in between. Especially for this space, Eek designed a robust table and chairs from raw wood. In each our our homes, we've used those special characteristics and challenges to make the house unique. But even if you're not renovating, the idea is the same. Take that uniqueness and let it shine. Got a cool architectural corner? Play it up! Working with avocado green shower tiles (raises hand)? Paint the cabinet a deeper green or a contrasting color and let the vintage tiles do their thing. You can always highlight what you've got to put your unique spin on things.
