I'm excited to share my latest publication in Knowledge Management for Development Journal: "Confluence of knowledge: Cyclical steps for transdisciplinary research in practice, Brazil." 🎉 Transdisciplinary research is often discussed as a way to bridge disciplines and address complex socio-environmental challenges. But what does it actually take to put it into practice? This article shares insights from a collaborative process with a fishing community and an academic research team in Brazil, highlighting the practical steps, challenges, and critical reflections involved. Rather than offering a fixed methodology, this work invites reflection: Are we truly engaging in transformative transdisciplinary science, or are we just reproducing dominant academic patterns? I hope this article contributes to ongoing conversations about the responsibilities and complexities of co-producing knowledge across different worlds. The #LowDensity territories are one of #Portugal's key priorities for balanced #TerritorialDevelopment. Finding development pathways for these areas has become a ''hot topic'' for #researchers and #policymakers. When I started my #postdoc at #CETRAD, #UTAD, and explored this research, I realized how fragmented the definitions and perceptions of low-density territories (also referred to as areas or regions). In our recently published paper, together with colleagues from CETRAD - Centro de Estudos Transdisciplinares para o Desenvolvimento, Universidade de Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro and the Federal Institute of Agricultural Economics, Rural and Mountain Research, #Vienna, #Austria, we systematically reviewed and defined low-density areas typical of #Mediterranean regions like #Italy, #Spain, and #France. We highlighted how these areas differ from the #SparselyPopulated territories in Northern #Europe. Additionally, we explored the opportunities these regions present for implementing the #EU #CohesionPolicy. 📢 NEW PAPER 📢 🌊 Collaboration between Centre for Marine Socioecology, University of Tasmania, UNSW Centre for Sustainable Development Reform, Cardiff University / Prifysgol Caerdydd, UNSW Canberra, Mosaic Insights. 🌊 The paper uses a Systematic Map method to explore the current evidence base on Ocean Literacy. 🌊 298 studies identified and analysed. 🌊 Most studies are undertaken in the Global Majority, use quantitative approaches and knowledge is the main focus. 🌊We also identified ten research-focused and operational priorities for the field. 🌊 The Map brings coherence to the existing evidence base, identifies gaps, and provides a way forward for research and practice and its implications for ocean and coastal management. 📢 📢 New publication in Cities: Based on a review of Scottish national planning reforms for vacant land, the paper identifies pathways for greater inclusion of informal and more-than-human placemaking in policy and planning practice. A study led by the talented Imogen Humphris and co-authored with Lummina Horlings. Highlights: 1️⃣ Concepts such as urban biodiversity support inclusion for more-than-human placemaking. 2️⃣ Persistent nature-culture divisions overlook interdependencies, constraining planning debates. 3️⃣ Inclusive planning for vacant land must counter reductivist placemaking perspectives. 4️⃣ Relational placemaking for vacant land should be regenerative, incremental and collaborative.
