This is the embarrassing result of having a room full of white people talking about “repopulating” an area. All but one of the people in this room do not have the language to speak about attracting immigrants and refugees to the Mahoning Valley. They ‘other’ the people they supposedly want to attract. They forget/ are ignorant of the complicated (by design) immigration process and don’t understand geopolitics or the U.S. foreign policy decisions that have led to people fleeing danger and poverty to come to this country. I am so embarrassed for the Business Journal for continuing to post such harmful content without anyone in the room with this lived experience guiding or even participating in this initiative. Terms like “repopulation” are soaked with white supremacy- even the thought of being able to just pick up and relocate people erases their humanity and self-determination. And thinking that having these prospective new residents’ food choices will counteract the actions like the “build the wall” activity that’s been prominent at the Canfield Fair in recent years? The folks in this room need cultural competency training in a really big way. “Infuse some negative element?” COME ON NOW. Thrive Mahoning Valley is doing amazing work to make a place that is very unwelcoming for non-white people into a welcoming one- and they are doing it by working WITH immigrants and refugees and Black, brown and indigenous folks- not just by sitting at long tables filled with unqualified and culturally incompetent “leaders.” I don’t want THRIVE MV’s awesome work to be overshadowed by this kind of ignorance.
