I recently came across a story that not only inspired me but also sparked hope for the future of women in leadership roles, especially in contexts where it's still a rarity. The journey of Rebecca Thorn, from managing a fish and chips shop in New Zealand to becoming the General Manager of Hotel Indigo Tokyo Shibuya, is not just a career leap—it's a monumental step towards challenging and changing gender norms in corporate Japan. What makes Rebecca's ascent to leadership in Japan so compelling is the broader context: it's exceptionally rare for women to hold executive positions in Japanese corporations. Her success story shines as a beacon of change, illustrating that talent, passion, and determination can break through traditional barriers. One quote from Rebecca resonated deeply with me: "It’s all about embracing the opportunities that come your way, no matter how unexpected they might be." How do we stop the bleeding? The "Great Break-up" continues with yet another female CEO exiting their leadership role. Stephanie Linnartz announced yesterday that she will be stepping down as President and CEO of Under Armour after only a year and surprise...the company's founder, Kevin Plank, will retake the helm. Her exit continues the alarming trend of departures of women from senior roles in the corporate world. Stephanie is someone I have always admired, especially for her incredible work at Marriott International. Over three decades at Marriott, Stephanie brought her expertise in enhancing online sales and developing Marriott's loyalty program, Bonvoy. She is a dedicated, empathetic leader with relentless customer focus. I am not sure of all the details behind the exit, but my guess is that the male dominated culture within Under Armour had something to do with it. To emphasize... Women are not breaking up with work. They are breaking up with their companies if they’re not delivering the employee and customer experience, and some of the cultural elements of work that are critically important to them. Today women only represent 10.4% of CEO roles in Fortune 500 companies. This continued trend could spell disaster for longer term gender equity in the senior ranks. 📣 To companies, we need to do better. 📣 To Stephanie....you are an amazing role model and leader. The Philippines made headlines when CNN reported that a Filipino-Black American beauty queen was crowned Miss Universe Philippines. With her win, Chelsea Manalo “shattered traditional beauty ideals held in the country.” Her triumph sparked conversations and debates about diversifying perceptions of beauty in a nation where lighter-skinned actors and models are the norm. In the business world, notions of the ideal employee are changing too. A survey conducted by the Boston Consulting Group shows that Southeast Asia has made significant strides towards diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives. Many companies have incorporated a more inclusive workplace, creating enhanced business value. Creating a truly inclusive workplace isn’t the sole responsibility of a DEI or HR team. I believe all employees must share accountability to put inclusion at the heart of the company’s culture. I recently shared with Authority Magazine how we at Philip Morris International are putting this insight into action by working to ensure everyone has a part in embedding inclusion into our values and culture—like with our “Inclusion Starts with I” program, which aims to make inclusion tangible and actionable for all.
