Can you Salsa? It was 1978, and the Saturday Night Fever craze was in full swing. Disco was everywhere—the Bee Gees, John Travolta, polyester suits, platform shoes, glittery makeup, and hairy chests. But in Venezuela, and much of Latin America, we only wanted to dance salsa. We craved the rhythm of the most iconic Latin American album ever, Siembra. I was 12, awkward, too young for heels, but eager to break out of my chrysalis into a butterfly. I was at that stage when your teeth are still too big for your face, you feel like you don’t have enough of anything, yet you’re trying to burst out. You want to wear makeup and prove how much you’ve grown, while nervously dancing with boys. Awkwardness was my constant companion. The quickest way to show that I was becoming a woman was to learn to dance salsa. The Venezuela I grew up in was a place where you knew when parties started, but never when they would end. The music would be loud, and the neighbours were happy because they were all invited—not just to avoid complaints, but because it was the classy thing to do. In the 1970s, Venezuela enjoyed the highest economic growth in Latin America and the lowest levels of inequality, thanks to the oil boom. There was plenty of money, and Venezuelans loved to party—loudly.
