"Dining halls are a lot quieter than they used to be, with kids on laptops or phones and rarely talking to each other. Students say that they want to connect with other students more, but it feels intrusive: it’s hard to interrupt someone watching a show on Netflix, working on a laptop, or seemingly engrossed in a podcast or TikTok". Concern about social media’s impact on kids is not new. But it’s gaining remarkable speed. Is there a way parents can encourage healthier smartphone habits? My almost 12yo is getting a phone later this month, so this episode of Learn with Dr. Emily W. King couldn't have come at a better time! Emily asks Andrea Davis from Better Screen Time questions like: • What's the latest info on how much time kids are spending on devices? • When are kids ready for devices? Specifically for phones? • When are they ready for social media? • How do you set boundaries around technology? • How do you bring up the potential for sexting, nudes, or pornography? • Is there value in having a family device? • Are there any apps or hardware that helps with parental controls? • Is there no hope once your child is down a YouTube rabbit hole? • What happens when your child breaks the rules on technology? Yikes. #screentime #podcast #parenting https://lnkd.in/e6fCdSij

I normally do not share things like this on this platform however I thought this was #WORTH sharing to everyone. EVERYONE in the world that has a phone NEEDS to listen to this! Learn how to use technology instead of being used by technology..learn how to have a different relationship with technology. Studies show we are spending 20 years on our phone! One of the reasons I have been putting my phone away and down for long periods of time when I can it really changes everything. #Enjoy and #listen https://lnkd.in/gkCtSMBM

We got a little fired up this week on Buffering. With iOS 18 released, marketers need to consider how changes Apple is making to the iPhone are going to impact what ads people see. As Zack Kilgore says in this clip. We don't need to throw everything away, BUT we do need to go back to the basics. Apple is going to make it harder for marketers to put content in front of people on their phone. These changes will be driven by distraction control, personalized notifications (driven by #ai), and changes to how email appears on your phone. The marketers who win in the future will be those that deeply understand who their customers and prospects want to become. They will use that knowledge, combined with a data driven approach to put contextually relevant content in front of people. Those ads won't feel like ads. Check out the full episode in the link below for more detail on how Zack and I believe these latest changes in #iOS18 will impact the marketing landscape. #podcast #fiber #marketinganalytics

🍎✨ Did 'The Simpsons' foresee the Apple Vision Pro? 📺🔮 The uncanny ability of "The Simpsons" to predict real-world events is at it again! Social media is abuzz with comparisons between a 2016 episode of the iconic show and Apple's latest release, the Apple Vision Pro spatial computer. In the episode titled "Friends and Family," residents of Springfield are seen using devices strikingly similar to the Vision Pro, leading to chaos in the city as characters lose their sense of space, walking into light poles and falling into manholes. While some may call it clairvoyance, former showrunner Bill Oakley has explained that these instances are often satirical reflections of real-life events from years prior. In a 2020 Reuters interview, Oakley mentioned, "It just seems like we were predicting things because history keeps repeating." This isn't the first time "The Simpsons" has seemingly foretold the future. Episodes from 1993 and 1998 foreshadowed events like Roy Horn's mauling and the discovery of the Higgs boson particle. Even a 1994 episode featuring a precursor to the iPhone had a moment influencing Apple's keyboard development, as revealed by Nitin Ganatra, Apple’s former director of engineering for iOS applications. While some connections may be stretches, the show's track record for aligning with real-world occurrences continues to captivate audiences. What are your thoughts on this latest revelation? 🤔📱 #thesimpsons #applevisionpro #predictions #technologytrends

Why do parental controls on smartphones so often fail? I really enjoyed my chat on this topic on the IAPS podcast with Emilie Darwin, Helena Grant of Wycliffe College and Neil Pollock of Schools Mobile. I argued: ➡ Most parental control software doesn't work if a child browses on 'private mode' or with a VPN. ➡ Much of it fails to pick up harmful content - see Joanna Stern in the WSJ: https://lnkd.in/eCne_hJy. ➡ Simple hacks evade many parental control features - e.g. changing the phone's time can reset daily limits; uninstalling and then re-installing forbidden apps makes them available again; harmful content can be sent via .doc or .pdf etc. A Parentkind poll found that 47% of children with parental controls knew how to bypass them. ➡ Even if the software worked perfectly, it still requires all parents in a peer group to act collectively. If one child has a smartphone without the right parental controls their friends will still access content that "once seen, can't be unseen". Rather than act alone and be forced to deal with the stressful pleadings and scheming of an addict, parents need support to act collectively and in concert with their child's school. That is why Smartphone Free Childhood is helping families to form pacts to delay buying their child a smartphone, and working with schools to help them become genuinely smartphone free. Are you a parent trying to navigate the digital world for your children? Or perhaps you were a child 20 years ago, and remember a time before smartphones, social media, and constant online connectivity? The gap is wide, challenging, yet fascinating. #Kids #Tech When I think about how much my childhood differed from my kids, it's mind-boggling. Back then, we were bounded by the limits of physicality, while kids today navigate between digital and physical realms seamlessly. #Change #ThenVsNow Now, the question is - is this shift beneficial? In my latest blog and podcast, I dive into the effects of digital evolution on our children's lives. The goal? To help parents and educators turn this challenge into an opportunity. Education is different these days... for a unique insight into students' experience in classrooms, check out this podcast!
So... several of us from SLA were on Vox's "Today, Explained" podcast talking about our new cell phone policy. It's a good podcast, although hearing the Governor of New York say that what we're doing is wrong was... something. I'm sure, given the structure of the podcast, she didn't hear the segment about us. She just heard that our policy is different than hers. It's worth a listen... especially for all the voices of SLA kids.
