Rachel is one of the most naturally brilliant people I've had the honour of calling a friend, and it's reassuring to know that the damage caused by some bitter withered husk of a teacher wasn't permanent.
But it makes me sick to my stomach to think of the countless individuals, in the present day and throughout history, people far more innately intelligent and capable than someone like me could ever hope to be, whose potential was completely squandered, derailed, or flat-out ruined by some clueless, spiteful berk in a position of authority over them, denying them the opportunity to excel purely due unfounded stereotypes and knee-jerk prejudices.
Stephen Jay Gould once said:
"“I am, somehow, less interested in the weight and convolutions of Einstein’s brain than in the near certainty that people of equal talent have lived and died in cotton fields and sweatshops.”
While I totally agree with this, what I'm talking about is worse again. Someone brilliant being born into a situation where there is no logical way to express or utilise it? That's bad enough. A brilliant mind capable of inventing the jet engine born in the midst of the black death era would obviously never have done so. A terrible waste, but what can you do?
But when someone *is* brilliant, and has a great deal to offer, and *could* do great things in the context they find themselves in? Only to be prevented from doing so because someone 'higher up' has pre-emptively decided that they're not capable of it, purely because of the 'type' of person they are? I'd argue that's worse again. It's like finding a rich seam of pure gold under your house and melting it all down to make particularly shiny pennies. Even at the most cynical level, it's clearly wasting incredibly valuable in the name of something clearly less worthwhile.
Basically, if you have an applicant or subordinate or collaborator, or colleague even, and your first thought is "*their* sort aren't good at this", whether it's due to their sex or gender or race or religion or class or background, you're not being 'reasonable'. Ultimately, you could be holding back the advancement of human civilisation.
Sure, you might say "Dean, that's a wild extrapolation to make!", and I'd agree. But is it any wilder than "This person is a woman/black/Muslim/trans/lower class/etc, therefore they are literally incapable of comprehending what I can comprehend"?

When I was 17 years old I ended up dropping A-level biology because my teacher vehemently believed "science isn't for girls" and that there was "no point" in me pursuing the subject. Imagine my vindicated delight all these years later to learn that I've passed my MSc with a distinction! 👩🎓

International Educator | Science Teacher in One World International School Singapore | Certified teacher on IB MYP Sciences, IB DP Biology, IGCSE, and AS&A-level Biology | Mentor in Global Schools Program
It was my first year teaching #Biology subject to Year 12 AS&A-level students in Cambridge International Education. I had 11 brilliant students in Biology class. I organized many #experiments and #activities, we practiced with lots of past papers. #MOCK exam was organized internally as a final exam of the AS level in the school. There was no same question in the exam that they practiced before. The exam was organized strictly following Cambridge International education rules on 3 Papers - Paper 1. Multiple Choice Questions, Paper 2 - AS level Structured questions, and Paper 3 - Advanced Practical Skills.
⚜️As a final result, 1 student got a #B, and the rest of the 10 students got an #A (there was no A star in the threshold, A was the highest grade).
I am proud of my students and their results. I have given my best effort, and they have matched it with theirs. Together, we have overcome many challenges and achieved significant improvement. They completed the AS level successfully and started to A2 level program 🎉
