*Most* people in Cyber aspire to be a CISO. There is nothing wrong with that, it's healthy to have ambition. But you're also not doing yourself a disservice by staying in the weeds, and the comfort, of being an IC or a Snr Manager Less politics to drain you, fewer stakeholders to entertain and manage. No need to pretend you’re an extrovert when you’d rather just sit by yourself. The idea of being a C-suite leader is attractive to many IT professionals. But the reality is often more challenging than many expect.

Way back in January of 2020, before the world knew what was in store for it with a global pandemic and resulting non-voluntary digital transformation, I wrote an article called The CxO Business Executive and Security Leadership’s Guide to Cyber Security Harmony. I wanted to explore common points of friction between business executives and CISOs (Chief Information Security Officers) and create a playbook to enhance communication and transparency between leaders. What came from it was a series of conversations that all boiled down to the important topic of how cybersecurity leaders and professionals engage with senior leadership, boards, and audit committees; and how they engage back. While much of that initial article is still relevant, we’ve made progress and it’s fair ro say I have plenty or new data, observations and recommendations. Take a look at my latest article at the link here: https://lnkd.in/gft6rfJz

You can write down your core values on a piece of paper and put them in a drawer… or you can live them out each week. At Echelon Risk + Cyber, we choose the latter. In our weekly pulse meetings, we always do team shoutouts, where teammates have the opportunity to recognize each other for what they contribute to Echelon. And each week, people incorporate our core values into their shoutouts, citing how client-centric a teammate is, or how they never shy away from facing issues head-on. I love seeing this each week because it tells me that we’re living out our core values every day - not just talking about them. Our shoutouts are also largely peer-to-peer, which feels even more powerful to me. If I were the only one offering praise, it might come across as contrived or inauthentic. But when teammates take the time to speak directly to each other’s achievements, that’s as authentic as it gets. At Echelon, we strive every day to embody our core values… and each week, we recognize those who do. Shoutout to everyone on the team!

Epiq’s Chief Information Security Officer, 🛡️Alyssa Miller, sat down with SecurityWeek for an engaging and insightful discussion about cybersecurity, leadership, and the legal sector. “Leadership, even in the tech space involves a different skill set than the tech jobs that usually lead to it. You can’t just change your title and jump in as a natural born leader: it definitely doesn’t work that way,” said Alyssa. https://lnkd.in/gNtshH3S #ciso #cybersecurity #cyberleadership #cyberawareness #cybersecurityawareness #cybersecuritysolutions

Last summer, we published one of my favorite assets I've ever worked on, "Rock the SOC: A Career Guide for Your First Analyst Role and Beyond." It provided invaluable insights to current and aspiring SOC professionals on how to progress in their careers. Today, the Devo team published a new guide that is definitely in the running as one of my all-time favorite assets: "The Modern CISO: An Essential Guide for CISO Success!" Thank you to Aaron Shaha, Carraig Stanwyck, Dd Budiharto CISSP CISM, Dom Glavach, CISSP, Kayla Williams, Lorna Koppel, and Richard LaTulip for providing your insights for this piece. And also thank you to the Keyfactor and CyberSN teams for supplying bonus data. It's a great read on the evolving role of the CISO, their sentiments toward the shifting threat and regulatory landscape, and how they can set themselves up for success in the future. Check it out. 👇 https://bit.ly/3QaO4ez

GRC Trail Guide | Student of Art & Cybersecurity | Community Builder | Nonprofit Founder | Mindfulness Advocate
Building a culture of people that care deeply is just good business. Caring deeply about the collective vision. Caring deeply about solving client’s problems. Caring deeply about every team member’s journey. Caring deeply about quality of work and making an impact. The proof of this is 360 Advanced. This weekend, I gathered with 120+ of my colleagues at the Rococo Steakhouse in St. Pete, Florida to celebrate all we accomplished in 2023. Every conversation I had was filled with excitement about what it’s like to work at 360 Advanced. Regardless of position or tenure, there was a sense that people understood that they are a part of something that matters. This did not happen by accident. CEO, Daniel Collins, MBA, CPA was intentional about building a culture of people who care deeply from the beginning. That cornerstone has been the foundation of the business he started 20 years ago. He knew from back then, that this is how to create a business that’s “built to last”. I’m extremely grateful to Dan, Danielle Kucera and the other founders for getting this thing started. And I am honored to have the opportunity to lay a few bricks of my own as we continue to build the business. I really can’t wait to show this all to the world in 2024 as we roll out a variety of initiatives that are going to be game changers in the industry. I’d also like to thank Patrick Tolliver, Matthew McNulty and Kristopher Francis for all their support to me over these last 2.5 years. They have provided an opportunity for me to grow my career in an industry and a about a firm I deeply care about. If this story resonates with you, and you would like to work WITH or FOR a cybersecurity compliance and audit firm like this, please let me know. #cybersecurity #compliance
