The CDC published results from their 2013-2023 Youth Risk Behavior Survey. Notably, they found a slight decrease in the percentage of students overall who experienced persistent feelings of sadness or hopelessness. The data also showed an increase in bullying, violence and racism. The CDC has been collecting and analyzing data on student health for over three decades which has allowed them to identify emerging issues like social media use, suicidal ideation, and changes in sexual health and substance use. New article by Valerie Anderson & I examining the relation between traumatic experiences and recidivism among youth. Key takeaways: 1. Experiences of trauma did not predict new petitions. 2. The MAYSI-2 Thought Disturbances did predict new petitions among boys. This scale should only be used for boys. However, this court used the scale for boys & girls in practice. This may represent concerns about fidelity of screening & assessment implementation in youth courts. 3. Youth of color were more likely to receive new petitions compared to white youth, indicating further evidence of racial and ethnic disparity in the juvenile legal system. 4. No variables (including risk score or prior charges) predicted new petitions among youth referred to the truancy unit (as opposed to the delinquency unit). Despite categorical differences in the types of charges youth in each unit had, they were not treated differently by the court. This finding calls into question whether juvenile courts should be used to respond to truancy. 5. We still have a long way to go in terms of measuring trauma among youth—especially as it relates to complex trauma, developmental trauma, and structural traumas such as racism and sexism.
