Great insight from Kellie on boards. “It's not always about asking them to do more for us (the organization). It's about what we can do with and for them.” Read Kellie’s blog and gain more incredible insight.
A CEO once said to me, “I would like us to have a conversation with one of my new board members.” “Of course,” I said. “What would you like to talk about?” “He wants to know what he is going to get from being on my board,” she said. “And I have never had anyone ask me that before!” Read on for the answer: https://bit.ly/3LRghVr

Money should never be the principal reason behind the decision to become a corporate director. Instead, individuals should serve as directors because they want to broaden their horizons and enjoy the intellectual challenge of being on a board. What is the meaning behind the brand name “The Alternative Board”? A lot of hours were spent trying to come up with a brand name to reflect our main goal; to have an affordable alternative to a high-paid board of directors. It was discovered that anyone who had a functional, high-performing board had to spend lots of money on this kind of talent. This level of advice was not available to privately held business owners at a price point that delivered value for money or was affordable. The Alternative Board provides an alternative to a high-paid board of directors. Thus: The Alternative Board.

Who is on your board? No. I am not talking about a corporate board. Your personal board. Who do you go to when: You have an idea, or even a crazy idea. You aren’t sure how to approach a situation. You need to make big decisions. When you think of your closest connections and who you spend the most time with as a board of advisors, it changes your perspective on who you allow into your inner circle. Ask yourself. 💡Does my board support my ideas? 🎙️Does my board give the right feedback on addressing situations? 💵Does my board help me navigate big decisions? After all, if this were a trusted board at a company you started, you would expect the above. So why accept less from those in your inner circle? Evaluate your personal board.

Closing out a full day of 1-1’s with our Business Directors. Then follows our Finance, People, and Marketing leaders next week. 9 hours straight in a room may not be everyone’s idea of fun but I love these days. They follow on closely from our monthly Boden Group Board meetings and set the tone for what we are doing to achieve our medium and long term goals. I love to hear about the great work our people are doing at every level, the ideas our people are bringing to the table, setting clear goals and how we will measure progress, how we can motivate our teams to achieve their own goals, and planning how to teach the skills and behaviours for them to keep moving forward. It’s also importantly the opportunity to set expectations so everyone is clear in what they are being asked to do, and what’s in it for them! No grey areas. My advice to anyone who hosts monthly reviews, is to spend no more than 20% of the time looking backwards, and the rest on what everyone is going to commit to, to change the future. Learn from what’s gone before but don’t dwell on it. Oh and be prepared for the meeting - the more care you put in the more you’ll get out of it. Just me and the coconut now - am I hallucinating…..
