It’s very interesting how 90% or more of consumers worldwide probably do not know any of the three companies depicted below. However, some of those three are present in at least one daily product consumed in any worldwide household.

With the global cocoa supply and pricing issues, for us and other independent chocolate manufacturing companies face a whole raft of challenges. And I'm talking manufacturing, not re-melting chocolate that is also so often also from one of these conglomerates. Our independence also provides opportunities and benefits to our trade and retail customers no matter how challenging. For us, for instance, for our trade customers we are able to provide tailor made formulations, and in retail be ground breaking and innovative with our new The Coffee bar. However cocoa farmers face the same dominance in the marketplace when selling. Which such a large % of the cocoa industry dominated by so few, it is hard to not avoid that the historic and now critical issues of farmers be at these doors. I would speculate that in the long term the current cocoa supply and price issues will effect to a greater extent independent manufacturers, a convenient if not planned result of historic issues coming to roost. Chocolate industry is complex, but a bit more enlightenment from trade buyers and consumers into brands being so interlocked may assist them in choosing real alternatives. So often trade and consumers make choices based on marketing positions of that brand, without knowing the connection that brand has with issues that may well not line up with their ideals.

Very insightful and not uncommon #supplychain perspective- thanks Beyond Good and Chris Bunio for calling this out. #riskmanagement involves #diversification of suppliers, but in many industries from #food to #construction rely on fewer and fewer upstream suppliers. What can good #governance do? - collaborate with supliers and get good upstream insights - ensure your key criteria are embedded in procurement policies, including #CSRD and #CSDDD compliance - explore alternatives and #nearsourcing if applicable - promote #transparency in engaging with your customers and in industry #sustainablebusiness
