Enforcement by local authorities is key to preventing environmental pollution – here's how this can improve in Ireland 🌲💧 The EPA has published a report on the environmental enforcement performance of local authorities (County and City Councils) in 2023. The report asks the question: How are we doing at a local level when it comes to enforcing our environmental laws in the areas of water, waste, air and noise? Here are some key takeaways: 🗑️Enforcement of waste activities delivered improvements and positive environmental outcomes, such as the detection and cessation of illegal waste activities. ❌Local authorities did not prioritise enforcement in the areas of water, air and noise in 2023, with poor inspection rates and follow up actions. 🐄Farm inspection rates are far below the level required to drive compliance and improve water quality. 🔥Local authorities need to ensure that only approved solid fuels (for example low-smoke coal and dry wood) are available for sale, to protect public health from harmful air pollutants. Good article yesterday in the Washington Post, highlighting some of the consequential, anti-environmental decisions from the Supreme Court the past two years. Other decisions at lower courts and in administrative procedure are eliminating the ability to limit and control pollution. We all bear the burdens of pollution, though some bear far more burden than others-a problem we refer to as environmental justice. Elimination of pollution control creates windfalls for polluting industries and their investors. The Supreme Court is systematically dismantling the legal foundation for pollution controls which have saved lives for people and protected the animals and plants we rely on to support life on earth. As global temperatures mount, the stakes are getting higher to control pollution but the windfalls for exempting polluters from controls are also larger.

Türkiye Pollution Restrictions and Associated Fines Türkiye has increased pollution fines by 43.93% for 2025, effective from January 1st, under the Türkiye Environmental Code. Members are urged to stay informed and follow recommended guidelines to avoid penalties for environmental violations in Turkish waters. Labour’s shadow environment secretary Steve Reed called for those involved with water companies implicated in pollution to “end up in the dock”. He told the Commons: “The environmental regulator has today condemned the disgusting state of our waterways caused by the Conservatives letting water companies pump them full of raw sewage. This has to stop. “So will the Government now back Labour’s plan and make water bosses personally criminally liable? So if they keep illegally dumping sewage, they end up in the dock.” There are already consent, connivance, neglect provisions. The plan appears to be to change the law to make senior managers of water companies ‘strictly liable’ for repeat offending by the company - which is obviously an excellent idea (if one ignores basic legal principles and unintended consequences) which with only a few tweaks could be extended to government ministers bearing in mind the contribution of regulatory decision-making for more than half a century
