If you aren’t looking at the Paris Olympic Games with bifocals on towards 2028, here’s a latest update to catch you up. Olympic Games are the heart and soul of countries and communities they represent. On top of that, the impression they leave upon their host cities is long lasting. We still look upon the LA Colleseium for those who attended 1984 Games, and I can still hear the songs (helped that my dad played them every year on 4th of July for decades after). Will local SoCal residents hop out of town and take in $$ from short term renting? Will our transportation network and Convention Center get the timely upgrades to be ready? Will the current homeless crisis become magnified? Are our health systems prepared given extreme summer heat conditions we face? Will first responders and utility companies get the support they need to do an ever increasing job? So many what ifs, so much investment, and so many people who could truly benefit if we prepare appropriately.

With England reaching the sharp end of UEFA EURO 2024 (thank you, Jude) and Wimbledon starting this week, the back pages have been dominated by events in Germany and SW19. However, with the Opening Ceremony just over three weeks away, the #Paris2024 Olympics (and Paralympics thereafter) will soon take centre stage. Hosting the world’s largest multi-sport international event inevitably presents logistical and operational challenges, with some 10,500 athletes from over 200 nations due to compete across 32 Olympic sports (and circa 4,400 athletes in 22 Paralympic sports). When you throw in the existing geo-political climate, medical/environmental considerations and the pursuit of many athletes to reach the pinnacle of competition, it is inevitable that lawyers will be involved (to some extent). In this first article, I examine some of the key legal issues/controversies that have dominated the build-up to the Paris Games, including: ▶ The participation of Russian and Belarusian athletes; ▶ Athlete selection and qualification; ▶ Para-athlete classification; ▶ Transgender and DSD athletes; and ▶ The environmental impact and sustainability of the Games. The Review of 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Infrastructure is being hotly contested. Having recently completed a précis feasibility study regarding the redevelopment of Perry Park as part of my MBA, the lack of mention of the facility in the review is disappointing. Several advantages of redevelopment are clear: ➡️ Establishing an inner city multi use & football home for Brisbane, doubling as a 2023 Olympic & Paralympic training venue, as highlighted in Football Australia’s recent federal inquiry into Olympic preparedness, covered by Cameron Atfield ➡️ Alleviation of schedule congestion at Suncorp Stadium, leading to improved player welfare & fan experience (https://lnkd.in/gKCs8mMG), along with increased capacity for non-sporting events ➡️ Serving as a Legacy project for Brisbane. The Review mentions Perry Park only once, stating “Many thought-provoking and carefully considered proposals have been submitted …. including Perry Park …. These have been assessed by the Review Panel and most of these proposals were found to have had merit and legacy outcomes for Queensland.” Noting that the review’s recommendations aim to address Brisbane & Queensland’s needs post Olympics & Paralympics, it’s disappointing Perry Park is not mentioned further. It goes without saying that this is part of a much larger, complex conversation, but some air time would be nice. Particularly disheartening given the facility's potential to support Australia's most participated sport.

I would like to see Canadian Sport get more funding and agree that the current scenario is not sustainable. I am also encouraged by the increased emphasis on prioritizing inclusion, safe sport and other areas of focus that more directly contribute to community betterment. But surely there must simultaneously be a commitment to explore doing things differently. Convergence of resources, skill and knowledge base need to be more aggressively advanced. Fewer silos, more sharing, and greater efficiency needs to be part of the path forward. An ecosystem of 61 organizations each with their respective boards of directors, high performance coaching systems, staffing structures , websites, marketing strategies, annual reports, and the list goes on, constitutes fertile ground to identify areas to share and save. I know I am over-simplifying and that there are complex nuances that will prohibit breaking down all silos. And I also know that some attempts have been made and some pieces of this sharing of resources have already been put in place. But it is an area of substantial opportunity that merits more prominent discussion and consideration. The topic will inevitably battle against the headwinds of confidence in the hard-won sport-specific systems, traditions, and methods already in place. But the scale of opportunity to uncover efficiency is too great to ignore. #DoneDifferently #NoSilos #Convergence
