“Have you ever heard of the Deaflympics?” That is the question Rose Ayling-Ellis, the first Deaf person to host live sports coverage asked the Channel 4 audience when they tuned in to watch the historic Paralympics Games in Paris. If you are not aware of what the Deaflympics are, I strongly encourage you as a fellow Deaflympian myself to take in what the Deaf sporting community are saying about our struggles, when it comes to the visibility, national interest, funding support and athletic development of our elite Deaf athletes. The rest of Europe are racing far ahead of the UK when it comes to the treatment and dignity of Deaflympians & Deaf athletes, we see examples like the Ukrainian President, Volodymyr Zelenskyy who celebrated and recognised the Ukrainian Deaflympic Team that competed at the 2023 Winter Deaflympics by holding a reception for them. Countries such as Italy, Germany & Poland support their Deaf athletes at World Championships to ensure that they are representing their country with dignity, respect and with the nation’s support behind them. Culture is what we are good at, that is our thing as a nation, we cannot let others take our thing, the UK needs to be the leader when it comes to total Deaf sporting equality and the inclusion of Deaf culture in our sporting communities. UK Deaf Sport works tirelessly to promote, advocate and manage Deaf sports in the UK, working with partners across all sports to ensure that Deaf athletes & Deaflympians are supported in any way they can, but it is not enough, we need National Governing Bodies, Partners, Sponsors and the wide sporting committees to get behind our work and support DeaflympicsGB at the Tokyo Deaflympics in November 2025. Granted, not all cities have the architectural and urban characteristics of Paris to attempt such theater, but the French should be commended for recognizing that they did and then committing to it. The city of #LosAngeles will host the Olympic Games for a third time in July 2028, after holding the events in 1932 and 1984. LA Mayor Karen Bass has announced that the #2028Olympics will be a car-free, transit-first event. Hopefully, the challenges, opportunities, and lessons from the Paris Olympics can be translated to the LA context and turn the coming #OlympicGames into a transformative force for the region's long-term, sustainable, and inclusive economic development. Hosting the Olympics costs billions, and there’s tons of evidence that suggests that cities lose tons of money over the Games. Will Paris 2024 be different? The newly constructed Olympic Village in Seine-Saint-Denis, on the outskirts of Paris, was built in part by private investors, in a development model that has become common for host cities. 🔥Hot Take: The 2024 Paris Olympics Opening Ceremony – A Bold Move with Mixed Results 🔥 With a luminous robotic horse gliding across the Seine, a French Marie Antoinette muppet show meets Mad Max performance, and Celine Dion singing on the Eiffel Tower, the 2024 Paris Olympics Opening Ceremony aimed high. Yet, a little over a week later, why does it feel flat? The concept of immersing global audiences within the city rather than in a massive arena was innovative. This approach eliminated the need for a new (typically controversial) complex and aimed to capture the city's heartbeat. However, it all comes down to the reality of putting on production within a bustling city, and many factors can compromise the result: Stage vs. Live-TV: When it comes to choreographing a massive live event for broadcasting, the choreographer, camera operators, and the TV Director must work hand in hand to plot out the best staging & shot list to bring the artistic vision to life and best shape or form for the billions of people watching on their screens. Unfortunately, this was a missed opportunity for Paris 2024, as the performances often looked messy, and essential choreography elements weren’t captured right. Physical Limitations: The physical limitations of placing enough cameras in an urban environment impacted the ability to capture the event's energy in its full glory. Coordination Issues: Because of these physical limitations, rolling from pre-recorded segments to live footage requires immense coordination. The transitions felt disjointed, disrupted the ceremony's flow, and stripped it of energy. Missed Connection: While they captured the physical presence of Paris, they missed the heart and purpose of the Olympics—to unify the top athletes from 204 countries on one stage. The joy on the athletes' faces while cruising on the Seine or even capturing your favorite superstar athletes from various countries was lost in translation due to the sheer distance and lack of access camera crews had. Takeaway: Hats off to Paris for a refreshing approach to the Opening Ceremony. Grand ideas can be groundbreaking, but there's a lot at stake. We love pushing boundaries and exploring never-before-seen approaches, but you must ensure you cover all your bases and give the audience what they want to see! #Paris2024 #Olympics #OpeningCeremony #Innovation #EventProduction #LessonsLearned

If we aren’t listening to and learning from our customers and our team, we aren’t maximizing our brands. I’d like to know from my network, what the most unique way you’ve sought out feedback from your customers and team? For the Olympics, their “customer” is probably a bit more expansive than most. However, every industry and every product can benefit from learning more about their customer base. A few weeks back I was glad to be a part of a focus group with Edmound Elzy where a specific portion of our customers discussed certain improvements that we had planned. We actually learned that, although still room for improvement, we were not nearly as far off the mark as we thought internally. This truly changed our own plans. It’s incredibly important to understand the perception of our own product and services from our customers’ eyes and not just our own. Doing so will be a game changer. THE OLYMPIC GAMES MESS No, I will not discuss the (supposedly) LGBTQI version of the Last Supper or the back to back cancellations of the swim contest in the Seine river because of the water quality, which are among the most striking controversies during the current Games in Paris. I call the whole concept a mess, because nobody seems to be able to keep the project within budget and without significant financial losses. If we take the most recent cases, in London the budget overrun was 75%, in Rio de Janeiro 352%, in Tokyo 128% and in Paris 115%. The losses respectively amount to several billions. Moreover, expensive facilities built for the Games have very limited use after the Games are over. In fact, most venues have been abandoned like in Athens after 2004. Accusations for corruption, bribery and misuse of funds add to the defamation of the institution. (https://lnkd.in/dfUbKNeP) The demand for reform is thus not surprising. To this end I present in the photo below a picture of the race track in ancient Olympia. This is where all started. It was back at that time when it was all about PEACE, FAIR PLAY and the ELEVATION OF HUMAN NATURE. Physical and spiritual. Let's have another careful look at this past, before we look into the future then. By the way, the ''property'' in the photo below is probably the only Olympic Games venue that still generates revenue almost 3,000 years after the first event in 776 BCE! #olympicgames

Is it still financially viable to host the Olympic Games!! Hosting the Olympic and Paralympic Games has become an extraordinary feat in and of itself — and a financially untenable one at that. In recent decades, the spectacle has been blemished by budget overruns, long-term debts, wasteful infrastructure, displacement and gentrification, political strife and environmental harm... It may take more drastic moves in the future for the Olympics to be truly sustainable and economically sound.. To ensure true long-term viability of the Olympics, Matheson...........it may come down to designating a single city or rotating through a couple of cities to serve as permanent hosts for the games.
