📢 Excited to announce the publication of our latest paper: "Novel compliant mechanism-based auxetic metamaterial: Kinematic and experimental analysis"! In this work, we developed a unique #auxetic #metamaterial obtained from the compliant version of 10-link 1DoF mechanism and verified its Poisson’s ratio through #kinematic analysis, FE modelling, and experimentation. Our study highlights how the motion capabilities of #linkages can be used to produce metamaterials with specific displacement responses. Hence, modifying unit cell dimensions and arrangements can tune auxetic responses, demonstrating the potential of using compliant #mechanisms in the #design of #mechanical metamaterials. 🎉🎉 𝐖𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐜𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐠𝐮𝐞 Alexander Jackstadt 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 Lightweight Engineering at FAST, KIT 𝐚𝐧𝐝 IAM-WK: Institute for Applied Materials, KIT 𝐨𝐧 𝐚𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐞𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐝𝐨𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐥 𝐝𝐞𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐞! 🎓   Fiber-reinforced polymers (FRPs) are widely used as a lightweight material of choice due to their outstanding weight-specific mechanical properties such as stiffness and strength. The combination with metal sheets, commonly referred to as fiber metal laminates (FMLs), additionally provides a high resistance and tolerance to damage. As with most lightweight materials, these advantages come at a cost. In particular, the high stiffness and low mass density of such materials or material systems make the resulting structures prone to vibrations as conventional lightweight materials usually offer only negligible material damping. The addition of highly compliant layers consisting of viscoelastic elastomer materials within the otherwise stiff laminate can significantly increase the achievable damping, following the principle of constrained-layer damping (CLD). Such a hybridization then allows for highly damped lightweight laminates, which can be tailored to achieve specific damping capabilities. 📘In particular, in his doctoral thesis, Alex considered hybrid fiber metal elastomer laminates (FMELs), consisting of carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP), aluminum, and different elastomer compounds in various laminates. I am pleased to announce that our latest research paper titled "𝗦𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵 𝗺𝗼𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗳 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗲 𝗹𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗺𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝗶𝗻𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘄𝗲𝗹𝗱𝗲𝗱 𝗷𝗼𝗶𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗺𝗮𝗴𝗻𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝗳𝗶𝗲𝗹𝗱 𝘁𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗶𝗾𝘂𝗲" has been published in the journal 𝐒𝐞𝐧𝐬𝐨𝐫𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐀𝐜𝐭𝐮𝐚𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐬 𝐀: 𝐏𝐡𝐲𝐬𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 and is now accessible online.   This work explores innovative methods for detecting and monitoring defects in composite materials, which are crucial for maintaining the integrity of advanced engineering structures. We developed two sensors capable of detecting variations in magnetic and electric fields caused by defects, observing clear signal trends that correlate with defect size. Our findings introduce a promising electromagnetic-based method for monitoring defects in CFRP laminates and thermoplastic welded joints.   A special thanks to my co-authors, Saman Farhangdoust, Ph.D., Karina C. I am thrilled to announce the publication of my latest research article in the Journal of Composites Science! 🎉 🔬 Title: Design of a Lightweight Origami Composite Crash Box: Experimental and Numerical Study on the Absorbed Energy in Frontal Impacts In this study, we explored the innovative design of an origami-inspired composite crash box, focusing on its energy absorption capabilities during frontal impacts. Our approach combined both experimental tests and numerical simulations to provide comprehensive insights into the performance of this lightweight structure. Key Highlights: Origami-Inspired Design: Leveraging the principles of origami to enhance structural efficiency and energy absorption. Composite Materials: Utilizing advanced composite materials for improved strength-to-weight ratios. Experimental Validation: Conducting rigorous experiments to validate the crash box performance. Numerical Simulations: Employing state-of-the-art simulation techniques to predict and optimize energy absorption characteristics. This research is a significant step towards developing safer, more efficient automotive structures, and I am excited about the potential applications of our findings. Exciting times at #TeamIMFAA! 🚀 Recently, our team attended the kick-off event for the second phase of the Plattform MaterialDigital at the Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung in 📍 Berlin.   Hochschule Aalen - Technik und Wirtschaft is actively involved in three out of the 11 initiated projects – with our institute contributing to two of them, including the first one HybridDigital, led by Prof. Iman Taha in Polymer Composite Engineering. Focusing on microstructural and mechanical characterization of #materials, the project aims to enhance property prediction and failure behaviour for sustainable design of metal/fibre reinforced hybrid components. 🌱 🌐 First results were presented by our members Dr. Dieter Meinhard and Johannes Bosch at the kick-off. #Metamaterials have shown great promise as innovative noise and vibration solutions. However, since manufacturing inevitably introduces #variability, it is key to understand how this affects their attenuation performance.   This is the focus of our latest paper “investigating and exploiting the impact of variability in resonator parameters on the vibration attenuation in locally resonant metamaterials” by Lucas Van Belle, Elke Deckers and Alice Cicirello (https://lnkd.in/e6E8YwFd). In this work, two non-intrusive #uncertainty propagation approaches are applied to find the upper and lower bounds of different performance metrics for variability in the resonators of metamaterial beams. A global search approach is used and compared with a machine learning-based uncertainty propagation approach proposed by Alice Cicirello and Filippo Giunta (https://lnkd.in/eSNMsHsq) which significantly reduces the required number of simulations. 🌟 I am thrilled to share my experience from participating in the 19th Youth Symposium on Experimental Solid Mechanics (YSESM 2024), which took place from June 5th to June 7th, 2024, in the beautiful city of Rome, Italy, hosted by the Engineering Department Università degli Studi Niccolò Cusano. 📚 My contribution to this event focused on the "Numerical and Experimental Analysis of Shape Memory Alloy-Polymer Composites for Aerodynamic Morphing Applications." 🔍 Abstract Highlights: Shape memory alloy (SMA)-polymer composites show great potential for aerodynamic morphing structures in automotive applications. However, challenges such as adhesion issues, thermomechanical stresses, and delamination during actuation cycles need to be addressed. My research employed a robust multi-material design strategy and a fully-coupled fluid-structure interaction (FSI) modeling framework within COMSOL Multiphysics to tackle these challenges. 🤝 Engaging with fellow researchers and industry experts at YSESM 2024 was an incredible opportunity. #YSESM2024 #ExperimentalMechanics #ShapeMemoryAlloys #FSI #AerospaceEngineering #Research #Innovation #COMSOL #Engineering

💡 CIMNE's Composites and Advanced Materials for Multifunctional Structures (CAMMS) group met with colleagues at Universitat de Girona on Jul 11. The meeting, part of the “AMADE Days”, provided for an insightful discussion on advances in the field. Read what they presented: 1️⃣ The CAMMS Group CAMMS' head, Dr. Fermin Otero, shared an overview of the group's capabilities, projects, and research interests. The team focuses on developing numerical methods and procedures for predicting and characterizing the performance of advanced materials. They use these methods to analyse large multifunctional structures in an array of engineering fields. ▶️ https://lnkd.in/dYR6tyGb 2️⃣ Definition of Multidimensional Reduced Order Models for the Elastic Analysis of Large Composite Structures Two different models for the analysis of large shell structures with irregularities were presented, part of Francesc Turon's work for his PhD:  • A Multi-scale Approach allowing for simulating laminates with complex configurations.  • The ROM using MDC, which makes it possible to replace a large irregularity in the composite by a super-element that provides equivalent stiffness to the structure. ▶️ https://lnkd.in/dPG38ivw 3️⃣ Topology Optimization with Additive Manufacturing Constraints Jose Antonio Torres Lerma, Dr. Alex Ferrer and Dr. Fermin Otero developed a Topology Optimization solution to reduce the fuel consumption in the transport industry. • The main principle of their work is to smooth the boundary and penalize gray areas in vehicle design. • This approach avoids bound formulation and extra mechanical constraints. • All this makes the method useful for density and level set. • They are currently working on topology optimization with composites. ▶️ https://lnkd.in/dDhTauku #CIMNE #Research #Composite #AdvanceMaterials #AdditiveManufacturing #Engineering
