Sometimes I get asked to describe my job. Being a Program Director is slightly different at each NIH institute, but here at NHGRI, the best analogy I can find is that of being one of a team of artists painting a giant, complex, beautiful mural that describes a future vision for genomics. Each of us has a slightly different drawing style, and sometimes we fight each other over the colors. But at the end of the day, we all love the work we do, and the mural reflects our collective passion for genomics. Plus, by the nature of the system, we act as checks and balances for each other's ideas, and like all good murals, every ten years or so it gets repainted anyway. That being said, the job can get deeper into one's psyche than some would prefer. Most if not all of us love genomic science far too much to just disconnect at 5pm, and at least in my case, I probably subliminally miss being in the lab to some extent and overcompensate by taking my public service role too personally. Unless I check myself often, my self-appraisal of empowering science in the Program Officer role gets linked to a sense of value as a person and a professional, and then I have to remind myself that I'm just one of the many artists painting this futuristic mural.

🎉 Celebrating Lab Week 2024! 🥼🔬 Scientists, lab technicians, and researchers! It's that time of the year where we celebrate the successes (and the occasional "Eureka!" moments) in the lab. In the spirit of lab week, we've created a Laboratory Bingo that might look a little too familiar! From the "I swear this worked last time" to the "Who put this in the -80°C freezer without labeling it?", we've all been there. This bingo is a tribute to those day-to-day lab occurrences that make us laugh, sigh, and sometimes scratch our heads in bewilderment. ✅ How to play: Share this bingo with your lab mates. Mark a square when you hear someone say a phrase or when it happens to you. The first to get four in a row gets the bragging rights (and maybe even a cup of coffee)! Let's see who gets to shout BINGO first! #LabWeek2024 #LabLife #ScienceHumor #LaboratoryBingo #LifeInLab
