RSPCA AWERB Training Survey To explore AWERB induction and training practices, RSPCA Animals in Science have conducted and published a survey of AWERB members across the UK. Read the report to find out about members’ knowledge gaps and training needs, and how you can use these insights to enable your local AWERB to operate effectively, ensuring good animal welfare, science, accountability and a Culture of Care. https://lnkd.in/enNK634U #AnimalsInScience #AnimalScience #EthicalReview

Last month, we hosted the RSPCA Lay Members' Forum, an event that brings together members of Animal Welfare and Ethical Review Bodies (AWERBs) from across the UK. We discussed: 🐁 reviewing animal research that does not fall under ASPA 🐝 the importance of considering insect sentience and welfare when using these animals in research 📝 retrospective review of project licences 🐑 and 'soft skills' for committee members. ✅ If you missed it but want to know more, you can read our report here: https://lnkd.in/ePiBnWis #animalwelfare #ethicalreview #3rs

Biomedical Research Awareness Day (BRAD) seeks to increase public awareness about the role of animals in medical advancements for the benefit of both humans and animals. BRAD highlights the importance of animal studies in biomedical research and demonstrates organisations' commitment to providing excellent animal care. https://lnkd.in/gCwVdpi At Ellegaard Göttingen Minipigs, we prioritise and invest in animal welfare. Animal welfare is essential for providing healthy minipigs to our clients, and an environment that stimulates the minipigs benefits both animals, staff, and research results. Therefore, the environment and activities in our breeding barriers are designed to stimulate the natural behaviour of Göttingen Minipigs. And though a playroom would not be part of their natural habitat, it provides exercise, the possibility to investigate—and, not least, they have fun! Get a glimpse into an occupied playroom and read more about our animal welfare initiatives here: https://lnkd.in/eh55wuik #EllegaardGöttingenMinipigs #GöttingenMinipigs

Understanding, preventing and alleviating pain and distress is a key part of the role of many animal care staff. Our “Pain and distress in laboratory animals” course, running online this June, provides detailed information on evaluating and managing pain in rodents, alongside discussions about other animals, and teaches attendees how to evaluate severity and how to use refinement to minimise welfare concerns. Enrol today either as a single #CPD course or as part of a Level 6 Diploma: https://lnkd.in/eQMkzUR4 #AnimalScience #AnimalTechnology

Today, on World Day for Laboratory Animals, I'm stands in solidarity with efforts to promote ethical research practices and the welfare of laboratory animals. As advocates for healthcare and innovation, we recognize the importance of advancing science while ensuring the humane treatment of all beings. Let's continue to support alternatives to animal testing and champion initiatives that prioritize both scientific progress and animal welfare. Together, we can create a future where research is ethical and compassionate. #WorldDayForLaboratoryAnimals #EthicalResearch #AnimalWelfare"

Understanding, preventing and alleviating pain and distress is a key part of the role of many animal care staff. Our “Pain and distress in laboratory animals” course gives an introduction to pain and nociception and current concepts of animal welfare. It also provides detailed information on evaluating and managing pain in rodents, including how to recognise normal or abnormal behaviour and signs of discomfort, pain, suffering, or distress, and an overview of pain in larger and non-mammalian species. The evaluation of severity of research procedures is also discussed, together with issues surrounding cumulative severity and retrospective assessment of procedures, as well as use of refinement to minimise welfare concerns. Enrol today either as a single #CPD course or as part of a Level 6 Diploma: https://lnkd.in/eQMkzUR4 #AnimalScience #AnimalTechnology
