Dear The Corporation of the City of Sarnia The Sarnia Chris Hadfield Airport is a vital asset to our community. As a commercial pilot and aircraft owner flying out of CYZR, I strongly believe that the airport plays an essential role in the economic, social, and strategic fabric of our border town and should not be viewed solely as a direct revenue-generating facility. Sarnia’s unique position as a border city, benefits significantly from the connectivity and opportunities offered by the airport. While the direct financial return on investment might not always be evident in municipal accounting, the broader economic and social benefits of the airport are undeniable: The airport facilitates access for businesses, investors, and professionals who rely on convenient air travel to reach Sarnia. It supports industries critical to our economy, including petrochemical, agriculture, and manufacturing sectors. By maintaining the airport, we enhance our ability to attract and retain businesses that require reliable transportation links for their operations. As a border community, Sarnia benefits from tourism and cross-border travel, which the airport can directly support. The airport also enables residents and visitors to connect with larger hubs efficiently, which contributes to local spending and enhances regional mobility. The airport serves as a critical asset for emergency services, such as medical air transport and disaster response. Losing this infrastructure could jeopardize rapid response capabilities in times of crisis. Relying solely on airports in major cities such as London or Toronto is neither practical nor sustainable for a growing community like Sarnia. Maintaining local air travel options for aircraft owners and corporate executives reduces travel time and costs for residents and businesses, while fostering a sense of independence and self-sufficiency. The Sarnia Chris Hadfield Airport is a point of pride for our city, symbolizing local achievement and our community’s connection to a national hero. Strategically, the airport positions Sarnia as a forward-thinking municipality capable of supporting growth, innovation, and global outreach. Small municipal airports like ours should not be evaluated purely as revenue-generating entities. They are public assets that provide critical infrastructure to support long-term community goals. Much like libraries, parks, or public transit, airports create value that transcends direct financial return by enriching the economic, social, and cultural quality of life for our residents. As you consider the future of this essential facility, I urge Council to invest in the airport as part of a holistic strategy for Sarnia’s growth and sustainability. The benefits of maintaining the Sarnia Chris Hadfield Airport extend far beyond spreadsheets—they support our community’s resilience, connectivity, and future prosperity.
Sarnia City Council is inviting residents to provide written input on the future of the Sarnia Chris Hadfield Airport as it prepares for a pivotal decision on February 10, 2025. https://lnkd.in/gdAW9ufN
