I’ve been in the plastics industry for 55 years, mostly in packaging. An industry reluctant to change. An industry charged by its customers to save weight and reduced cost but doesn’t want to make changes. Standardisation of PET preforms is preventing weight reduction in bottles. It is easy to reduce bottle weight by 3% by thinning the preform base but it means new tooling. Foaming technologies can easily reduce the weight of PP containers, but it means buying a MuCell system or using expensive blowing agents, and have a different mind set when applying the tech’s. Injection compression moulding has proved its ability to achieve longer flow lengths, allowing thinner wall sections but its different. To get the best out of ICM the moulds need to be designed for ICM and in most cases, new injection moulding machines that have the clamp control and injection speeds required. Injection blow moulding to produce light weight PET containers is not being exploited, even though PET has twice the mechanical strength of PP so would save a lot of weight with improved recycling. These are just a few examples of what can be done to help brand owners to achieve their weight reduction targets, but the converters in the industry just continue to stick to what they know and protect their asset investments. Better ways require better equipment and training, this means spending money to save money, something the industry doesn’t want to do.
