For many years now, I’ve noticed that working to improve, invest in, or (oddly) defend public education brings out the best in people. It’s a never-ending, ever-widening labor of love for young people, communities, and the idea of a functioning, or better yet, a vibrant democracy. Sometimes it’s hard to see an immediate, real-world impact, especially if you don’t work in the classroom or regularly visit schools (miss the good old days). But whether it's educators inspiring students and anchoring communities, advocates making sure the system works for everyone, or innovators of all types bringing new ideas forward, supporting the promise of a great education can be our best and most tangible expression of compassion, justice, and hope for the future. And I don’t think there’s ever been a time when we’ve needed more of that collective, teetering on existential, hope. I feel incredibly lucky to still be fighting the good fight, now with the brilliant team of education dreamers, believers, and storytellers at FINN Partners—a few months in already. Together, we’re showing that when we work in service of education from the many vantage points and undertakings our clients bring, we elevate not only educational progress and ideas but also each other. Stay hopeful, friends.
Julian Vinocur joins FINN Partners’ education team as a vice president leading work with a variety of higher education, K-12 curriculum and crisis clients. Julian’s career spans positions from the Alliance for Public Education to NYC Public Schools and the Fund for Public Schools, as well as the Association of College and University Educators and TNTP. Throughout his career, his work has centered on telling stories that establish the brand and authority of public education as a pillar of opportunity and democratic ideals. He has worked on various public-private partnerships to support the needs of educators and students in communities across NYC and the U.S.

Just reviewed LEAP results of GEO’s Baton Rouge schools. Here are highlights. There are 81 EBR schools. While GEO schools are not EBR-approved schools (we are approved by the state board), we do serve EBR students. There are only 20 EBR schools who performed better than our two K-8 schools when it comes to serving Black students, putting our schools in the top 25% of all EBR schools. And that includes EBR’s many selective-enrollment magnet schools. We are open enrollment and yes, we provide transportation. When it comes to improvement from last year to this year, we are #7 and #8 out of 81 schools in EBR. We beat the state and EBR in both performance and improvement when you look at the results for our Black students. If you look at raw scores (all students), there are only 23 schools that performed better and six who improved more than ours. Pretty proud of our team and leadership in Baton Rouge. President and Chief Executive Officer, and Board Member, Education Forward Arizona. Helping students succeed; increasing postsecondary attainment to ensure a brighter future for Arizona
Across #Arizona —and really, across the country—there is a growing conversation about the value of college…Is it worth it? Who should go to college? Who really benefits from a college education? There is a lot of chatter suggesting that maybe education and training after high school isn’t worth it, or that the public doesn’t see the value of that for everybody. Yesterday we hosted this Morning Scoop with the Arizona Capitol Times to respond with strong evidence that Arizona voters do see value in education and training beyond high school. And, #voters want the state's Policy, Legislative, Education, and Business leaders do more to provide opportunities for #postsecondary education and training. But as you will hear our panelists say, this is not just an #education issue! Increasing opportunities for education and training after high school provides amazing benefits to individuals, their families and communities, and to the economic strength of the state. This issue affects every single one of us. Find out why in the post ⤵ .
ICYMI: Today's #MorningScoop with Arizona Capitol Times shed light on how Arizonans feel about the importance of education and training after high school, and what actions are needed to help our state reach it's attainment goal, #Achieve60AZ. Thank you to Gary Grado for excellent hosting and our incredible panelists: Rich Nickel, Education Forward Arizona Sybil Francis, Center for the Future of Arizona Monica Villalobos, Arizona Hispanic Chamber of Commerce Paul Bentz, HighGround Inc.
