Why use a Distributor or Intermediary? The answer is simple, they help our organisation market, sell or service end customers better more cost-effectively than we can or they add value in a way that we can't. If our channel partner does not do that we shouldn't continue to use them. At the end of the day they are providing a service for us and like any other service provider they need to be managed. Do you think the future of our industry is better with a local distributor of washer and dryer equipment or the expanding role of factory direct distribution? This expansion includes those factories that are acquiring local distributors and keeping the old names and those directly marketing under the factory names. In the past, I believe lower prices could be negotiated with local distributors, especially when they were in need of making sales to pay their bills. Will factory direct sales result in overall higher prices? Will the experience of local knowledge infused distributors be replaced with factory sales people with limited to no local knowledge? Often skilled owners could, prior to their purchase, from a local distributor agree that no other equipment of that brand would be sold to a competitor in their marketing area for a number of years. Will this practice continue with factory direct sales?

While the company realises maximum revenue from selling fuel, it encourages customers to buy their brand of lubricants. A shoe shop selling socks is cross selling. Something interesting can be observed in grocery shops- scissors being displayed near grocery shelves. With stricter norms about plastic being in force, brands have created alternate packaging in aluminum foil. Shop keepers realised that home makers will need a scissor to neatly cut open the packaging, and so started dangling scissors packs randomly near the grocery shelves. Cross selling increases customer loyalty(a subtle realisation that the shop is thinking about the buyer) and customer relationship.
