Exporting these products maximizes the use of slaughtered animals and generates additional revenue for the sector, adding value. Last year, Chile authorized the import of several Brazilian products, including fresh papaya, turkey, and quail poultry genetic material, among others. Between 2022 and 2023, Brazil's agricultural exports to Chile increased by 6.5%, from US$ 1.76 billion to US$ 1.87 billion. Between January and May 2018, the United Kingdom imported the equivalent of US$1.25 billion in Brazilian products, such as crushed soybeans, ores, coffee beans, meats, and preserves. During the same period, revenue obtained from exports to Brazil amounted to US$899.35 million, including gasoline, human and veterinary medicines, and manufactured products. Changes for UK Dairy. The final report of the Food Ethics Council’s Dairy Project, recently published, highlights the action that is need to shift dairy towards a system that is fairer for people, animals and the planet. The starting premise for the project was that farmers need to be empowered rather than blamed. From talking to farmers and others in the dairy value chain over a two year plus period, the findings of the research reinforced the notion that most farmers do want to change, but are held back by market pressures, dairy being treated as an undervalued commodity, unrealistic asks and a lack of the right kind of support. The report captures insights from farmers, processors, retailers and foodservice companies about what needs to change. The Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA) and the Latin American Poultry Association (ALA) have launched a comprehensive guide aimed at enhancing the international trade of poultry products from Latin America. This guide, titled “Guide for the Identification and Systematization of Information on International Trade Regulations for the Poultry Sector,” is now accessible on the official websites of both organizations. Purpose and importance The primary objective of this guide is to support the development of the poultry sector in Latin America and the Caribbean by providing exporters with easy and organized access to national and multilateral regulations relevant to the commercialization of poultry products. This initiative is crucial for the economic development of the region and for ensuring global food security. Lloyd Day, Deputy Director of IICA, emphasized the significant potential for exporting poultry meat from Latin America. He highlighted that systematizing trade rules and working based on scientific principles are essential for achieving success in the international market. Joaquín Fernández, President of ALA, echoed this sentiment, stating that there is a promising future for Latin America in the production and commercialization of poultry. Dealing with Stricter Phytosanitary Inspections: How FMI Navigates the Challenges In recent years, we’ve all seen how phytosanitary inspections, particularly on limes, have become significantly stricter. It’s not uncommon for containers filled with healthy fruit to be denied entry into the European Union due to concerns about Xanthomonas or Elsinoë. The result? Costly re-exporting or even destruction of perfectly good fruit—leading to significant financial loss and value destruction. At FMI, we’re not immune to these challenges. We’ve faced our share of rejected containers. However, as lime specialists, we’ve taken proactive steps to mitigate these risks as much as possible. Our approach? Implementing strict inspections early in the supply chain. We have dedicated personnel on the ground in Brazil and Colombia who work closely with growers and packing houses. Broad coalition of stakeholders in the EU, including Copa-Cogeca, Euroseeds, Europatat, Coceral, the European Beet Growers (CIBE), and CEPM Maiz'Europe raise concerns over proposed EU Plant Reproductive Material (PRM) amendments.   https://lnkd.in/e_273xHR The co-signing organizations emphasize the importance of maintaining the balance achieved in the original proposal from the European Commission. They argue that the AGRI Committee report compromises this balance by introducing exemptions that could allow unchecked PRM to reach the market without proper assurances or traceability. "This, in all likelihood, would lead to the establishment of a parallel, uncontrolled market that undermines the efforts of plant breeders and farmers to increase sustainability while ensuring food security in Europe," the statement warns.
