Let's all learn from this.
I interviewed a CFO back in my early days in talent acquisition. It was the first time in my career I was intimidated by a candidate. This wasn't the normal candidate I was talking to at that point in my career. I was talking to guys in Autobell uniforms trying to start in accounting or my first Controller candidate - I think he thought it was Halloween when I met him and he was dressed as Michael Knight. It was a sweet leather jacket for sure. But this CFO become a candidate first - then a client - and a friend somewhere along the way. Mentor might be a better word. He's the kind of person you look up to for a lot of reasons - I did - the first company where I placed him everyone did - and the second company where I placed him everyone did there too. But he's moved on to a new opportunity with a very large company and now our relationship is mentor/friend because his company has an internal "talent" team. The company is also remote. And they hired a fraud recently. The background check on this person took months. The person ended up being onboard for maybe 4-5 months. Just in salary and benefits alone it cost them over $50k. And I'm fairly certain (as he is at this point) that the person had a made up resume. This CFO is extremely sharp but like a lot of people he's not a professional interviewer - and this girl (we think) - got one over on him - his internal talent team - and their background check process. Which brings me to my next point. Do references. From a person's previous employers. It's a third form of due diligence that is independent of the first two: 1. Interview - an in person or virtual meeting - sure you can de duped 2. Background check - harder to dupe this but not impossible - and depends on what you're checking - if it's just a criminal record - anyone can have a clean record whether they're a truck driver or a CFO - it doesn't mean they're a fit for your finance role. 3. References - another step in the process that will verify if a person is who they say they are. (We check 3.) In the remote world where you don't know someone at all - probably have zero mutual connections or familiarity with companies - it is imperative you do your due diligence. Good luck with your hiring out there. #duediligence #hiring #marketing #accounting #finance
