Inclusive teaching to promote student belonging is a powerful strategy to retain diverse students in STEM. I found this thesis particularly insightful, especially regarding the development of STEM faculty. She outlines key steps: understanding equity issues, recognizing dissatisfaction with current outcomes, engaging in teaching development focused on belonging, and implementing new instructional practices. Well said, Kimberly Hughes! https://lnkd.in/e-B5HDBK

Education should be the great equalizer, but many classrooms still fall short. Biases in curriculums, unequal resources, and limited representation continue to leave many voices unheard. Creating inclusive classrooms isn’t just about adding diverse books or celebrating special days—it’s about rethinking how we teach and what we prioritize. Inclusion benefits everyone: it improves academic outcomes, fosters empathy, and helps students see the world—and themselves—more clearly. To make this vision a reality, we must: - Diversify the curriculum to include all voices. - Provide teachers with the tools to address bias. - Create spaces where students feel safe to share and learn. Imagine a classroom where every student feels seen, valued, and empowered. That’s the future we’re working toward in 2025.

Diversity within the educational sector has a profound impact on students, educators, and society as a whole. Here’s a quick look at why: 🔷 Diverse teaching staff brings a plethora of perspectives that enrich the curriculum, offering students a broader understanding of the global community. 🔷 Evidence suggests that students benefit academically and socially when their educators reflect their own backgrounds, creating a deeper connection and understanding. 🔷 Promoting diversity among teachers helps lay the groundwork for a more inclusive society, instilling values of tolerance and understanding from a young age. HONOURING TEACHERS AS BUILDERS OF SOCIETAL FOUNDATIONS. As a teacher and sociologist, I deeply appreciate the profound role educators play in shaping society. On this World Teachers' Day, I join in celebrating not only my journey but also the journeys of countless teachers around the world. We are more than instructors; we are agents of transformation, guiding the next generation to think critically, embrace diversity, and contribute meaningfully to society. Teaching goes beyond the curriculum—it’s about nurturing minds, fostering resilience, and building values that echo throughout communities. Each lesson we impart is a building block for a better, more cohesive future. Despite the evolving challenges we face in the classroom, we remain resilient, adapting and innovating. Today, I stand with my fellow teachers, celebrating our shared commitment to nurturing the future and strengthening the very foundation of our society. Together, we shape the world, one student at a time. #WorldTeachersDay #ProudTeacher #SociologyOfEducation #TeachersAsChangeMakers
