Hyderabad No Longer the Capital of Andhra Pradesh Hyderabad will cease to be the joint capital of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. As stipulated in the AP Reorganisation Act, 2014: - Section 5(1): "On and from the appointed day, i.e., June 2, Hyderabad in the existing state of Andhra Pradesh shall be the common capital of the state of Telangana and the state of Andhra for such period not exceeding 10 years." - Section 5(2): After this period, Hyderabad will be the capital of Telangana only, necessitating the establishment of a new capital for Andhra Pradesh. Despite Andhra Pradesh ceasing to use Hyderabad as its capital shortly after the 2014 bifurcation, retaining only a few buildings, this official change is noteworthy. The state has yet to finalize a permanent capital amid ongoing disputes between Amaravati and Visakhapatnam. Chief Minister Jagan Mohan Reddy has proposed a decentralized approach with Visakhapatnam as the administrative capital, Amaravati as the legislative capital, and Kurnool as the judicial capital. This legal transition underscores the evolving political landscape in the region. ⏳ Is Short-Term Leadership the New Normal for India's Top Judge? A recent article in the Supreme Court Observer [Supreme Court Observer - A living archive of the Supreme Court of India] sheds light on a concerning trend: the expected decline in the average tenure of Chief Justices of India (CJI) over the next decade. Traditionally, the CJI position has been filled based on seniority. However, this practice seems to be leading to a "revolving door" effect, with CJIs serving shorter and shorter terms. The average tenure currently sits at just 1.5 years, with many CJIs holding the office for significantly less. This trend raises questions about the stability and effectiveness of India's judicial leadership.** The article highlights the potential benefits of longer tenures, such as: Enhanced continuity and focus on long-term goals Greater opportunity to implement reforms and initiatives Increased institutional memory and experience It's important to consider potential solutions and foster discussion on this critical issue. What are your thoughts on the potential impact of shorter CJI tenures? Let's discuss in the comments! Supreme Court Observer #India #SupremeCourt #JudicialLeadership #CJITENURE #trending

The Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) president Kapil Sibal on Thursday addressed a press conference at his residence and said he was surprised and taken aback by the video showing Prime Minister Narendra Modi performing Ganesh Puja at Chief Justice Of India DY Chandrachud’s home. Speaking to the media, Sibal said that even if there is nothing behind it, it sends a wrong signal to people of the country and harms the institutions when public functionaries in such high positions are seen like that. While speaking at the press conference, Sibal said that the publication of a private event was unfortunate and “it should have been best avoided.” He further said that the Prime Minister of India should not have shown interest in such an event. “No public functionary, especially those who hold the highest offices in country, should make public such a private event...I am sure, that maybe the Chief Justice was not aware that this was being publicised...it is unfortunate...Prime Minister of India should not have shown interest in going to such a private event. Those he consulted might have told him that this may send a wrong signal,” Sibal said. . . The Karnataka Cabinet has approved an internal quota system among Scheduled Castes (SCs), aiming to address long-standing disparities within the community. This decision follows an August 1 Supreme Court ruling that allows states to create sub-classifications within SCs for targeted affirmative action. A commission, led by a retired High Court judge, will collect data and propose an equitable quota structure for SCs within three months. Minister for Law and Parliamentary Affairs HK Patil confirmed that recruitment processes will pause until the commission's report is complete, ensuring new policies reflect a fair distribution of reservation benefits. The decision revisits the recommendations of the Justice AJ Sadashiva Commission, which in 2012 suggested dividing SC communities into groups with distinct quotas, and builds on past proposals by previous administrations. As Karnataka awaits the commission’s findings, this move may set a precedent for other states considering similar policies to address internal inequities within SC communities......
