Whiteboard. Blank space. Clean canvas. Three different names we might use as metaphors to describe the creative concept/planning process. I'm reminded of them this morning in my room at the new #Alamite in downtown Tuscaloosa. I'm in town for a krewe event benefiting Five Horizons Health Services. After last night's kickoff party several friends and I patronized a local business (Broadway Pizza) operated by one of our krewe brothers. This morning, staring back at me from a white box - with a few greasy stains in its liner - it occurs to me how much knowledge I've gained over two years at WestRock Company. 1. The material used to form this box is correctly called "corrugate" not "cardboard." 2. Pizza boxes are constructed using corrugate. It is fully recyclable, even with the grease and, more important the recycled content (OCC) is promptly returned to the manufacturing system and used to make new boxes. 3. Pizza is life. That's why we have #nationalpizzaday. 4. Knowledge is power. That's why we must share it. Lisa Bowles 5. Opportunity can lurk in obvious places. We've all felt that sense of peace when we see a safety seal on a beverage we just bought. It signals that the product is untouched and intact, giving us a feeling of being the first to enjoy it since it left the production line, even though the same applies to packages without such a seal. However, a couple of years ago, San Pellegrino decided to remove this feature, along with other design elements that effectively captured attention. I’ve seen this happen so many times. You make a choice to price reduce in some way and put the fundamentals of consumer psychology second and then you hear about it (very quickly) from consumers. If it ain’t broke - don’t fix it. Find other ways to add “perceived” value to consumers or cut costs in other ways.
