In response to your post, David Penn, I reviewed the database I have of 30,000 past election polls. The Labour Party's lower than expected 34% vote share in the UK general election, compared to the predicted 39%, along with a 10% drop in voter turnout, does seem to be quite typical of elections where one party holds such a significant 20-point lead going into an election. I presume because people are not worrying so much about the outcome, some are more laissez-faire about voting and deciding who to vote for and feel more comfortable protest voting. The result is many people end up not really deciding who they will vote for until they are actually standing in the voting booth. This clearly makes these types of elections very difficult to predict accurately ahead of time compared to other closer elections. Note, the first chart shows the difference between poll predictions and vote share based on the lead size of the winning party going into the election. The second chart compares average voter turnout by lead size and is based on polling vote share data from around 300 past elections around the world. You might note that when elections are very tight, there are also more significant polling movements, as tighter races tend to encourage more voter participation and last-minute vote choice compromises both again harder to predict and model through classical polling methods.

Wouldn’t it be nice if everyone who tells us they plan to vote actually turns out this November? For National Voter Registration Day, we wanted to take a closer look at the gap between voter intention and actual voter turnout. Our data from the past year indicates that nearly all registered voters, over 90% of men and women, say they plan to participate in the upcoming election. Of course, sometimes we fall short of our best intentions. While voter turnout in U.S. presidential elections has been on the rise, with 67% of eligible voters casting their ballots in the 2020 presidential election, there’s still a 30% gap between the number of people who express a desire to vote and who actually turn out. This year's Presidential Election will again come down to the role of a few SWING STATES. The Party of Trump is now working constantly in six key swing states (= the undemocratic byproduct of Electoral College politics). The GOP is trying hardest to SUPRESS votes in: Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin, Georgia, Arizona, and Nevada. To be sure, the Trump team will badly lose the POPULAR Vote count (again), but they know it's the Electoral count that matters. And please be advised: IF they see themselves losing the Electoral count, the Trump team has a sinister "backup plan" in the Constitution's 12th Amendment. Wherever Republicans now hold office as Secretaries of State or as election officials (particularly in the swing states), they will likely be following a national GOP contingency strategy to "create enough CHAOS & UNCERTAINTY" about any unfavorable election results. This will allow them the option of altogether avoiding the Electoral College system. They'll just cry foul, and NOT send their electors. When neither candidate can reach 270, they'll invoke the 12th. Our antiquated Constitution's 12th Amendment could offer Trump an alternate procedure - bypassing the Electoral College - in which each US state gets one vote, as directed by their state legislatures (most are Republican controlled). The proceeding would be conducted in the U.S. House of Representatives, likely in January 2025. Under this scenario, Trump would likely win 26-24. A 12th Amendment procedure was last used successfully to choose an unpopular President in 1876. We can be grateful to the ACLU and many democracy watchdogs in the USA. More vigilance is much needed! It's the calm before the storm. Nearly 2,600 polling places will be open statewide Tuesday morning with people ready to vote. State elections officials Karen Brinson Bell and Paul Cox hosted a conference on Monday morning to provide updates and information about Election Day. North Carolina is among 15 states holding primaries on Tuesday including Texas and California. Bell and Cox warned that election night results will come out slower than previous elections. That's because of changes to state law about how the votes are counted. Early voting ballots will not be counted ahead of time. This election that includes 670,000 in-person early voters and 19,000 mail-in votes. These results are expected to be closely watched nationally and here at home. North Carolina is considered a swing state, and it could have a major impact on the race to the White House. Ahead of Super Tuesday, three major players made stops in the state: Vice President Kamala Harris; Republican presidential hopeful Nikki Haley; and former President Donald Trump. Polling places will be open from 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Election Day. State law allows anyone in line at 7:30 p.m. to still cast their vote.

In exactly 5 months the US will vote and elect its next President. At least, that’s the theory. :) In practice, a very small part of the US will have an outsized role in determining the outcome. Let’s dig in some numbers. If you’re new to it, the next US president needs 270 electoral college votes to be elected (each of the 50 states gets + or - electoral votes based on its population). As you can see from the map, a lot of states are expected to vote one way (eg blue states for Democrats, red for Republicans), and no one sees that changing by November 5th. By opposition, the results in a narrow set of states are not easily predicted in advance; they are called the “swing states”. These are the states where the next president will be determined. As two of the most knowledgeable campaign managers put it in their podcast, “in this election year, there’s about 20 counties that will determine this presidential election.” (David Plouffe, for President Obama, and Kellyanne Conway , for President Trump). Now go a step further, within these swing counties, there are about 5-6M voters who are either (1) registered as Independents, (2) non-voters who end up voting, (3) voters switching party, etc., who will determine if and by how much each candidate will win or lose. 6M voters, that's ~3% of the total registered voters. That’s marginal. And that’s what you should remember about the US presidential elections: it is a game won based on who gets out and vote, played on and by the margins (e.g. Biden won Georgia and Arizona - two decisive States - in 2020 by ~11,000 votes, and Wisconsin by 20,000 votes). Almost one-third (172 members) of Congress are Election Deniers. And 19 states have Election Deniers in statewide roles that will play a role in administering the 2024 election. Earlier this year, Election Center CEO Tammy Patrick, C.E.R.A. offered two resolutions for voters for a free and fair 2024 election in an interview with the Center for Public Integrity: 1) that voters think critically when hearing any information; and 2) that they take early action to ensure their ability to vote where they want to vote and for the candidates they want to vote for.
