We (Testars Quarter ) aren’t that big about planning things like this, it always comes at the whim of light, an instruction from God through me or any member of the team. This event was supposed to be on April 27th and another on March 30 but God said to swap and we swapped. Now this is 400 signups later and this is minus the planning team, the speakers, the over 30 volunteers, and 5 partners. What do I see? I see an opening of heaven breathing wisdom, life and growth into the lives of the attendees. And it shall be said that… it all started on March 30, 2024… Oh, you missed the signup? As we count down to the final job fair of the ReelSkills4Agribusiness project, I am reminded of the last job fair we organised in August 2023. It was virtual. We had held a physical #jobfair in November 2022 which was well-attended, but after months of deliberation, we decided to go virtual for the second fair, no thanks to the rising fuel costs in Nigeria. No member of the team had ever organised a virtual job fair (I had only attended one as a speaker). The more we planned, the more we realised the benefits and limitations of each type of job fair. It was a lot of work but we pulled it off, with #lessonslearnt in the process: 1. You probably know that the most critical factor for holding a virtual job fair is strong internet access - for the organisers, candidates, employers and speakers. Despite having 3 back-up modems, we still had some glitches, but thankfully, the admin did not drop off throughout the fair. 2. The most important participants are the employers - they have the jobs that make it a job fair; and the candidates - they come for the jobs. We found that more candidates signed up, and turned up for the virtual job fair than for the physical fair. More employers signed up for the virtual fair, however, some of them dropped off at the last minute. 3. Whereas in a physical job fair, candidates may decide which employer booth/stand to visit even up to last minute; in a virtual job fair, choice is limited because you would be assigned to breakout rooms (for interviews) based on the jobs you are a best fit for ... and once you are in a breakout room, you are in - unless you or the internet decide otherwise. 4. In a physical job fair, candidates may stay at a company stand for as long as they and the employer need. However, with a virtual job fair, all breakout rooms sessions (for interviews) start and end at the same time. After this, everyone is redirected to the general session, and this is repeated until the end of the job fair. 5. Some candidates appeared to be uncomfortable with an online interview. We offered useful tips but talking to a screen can take some getting used to. 6. It helped to offer some candidates the option of coming to the training centre to join the job fair. There we provided laptops, ear phones and of course internet access for them to participate easily. This was our experience. Have you ever organised - or attended - a physical or virtual job fair?
