The experts are back James Timpson's appointment as Prisons Minister was followed by a raft of other Government appointments of people who actually know stuff, which made me think.... I've always been a fan of using experts to support me in my work - and that's been an enormous help recently. When I was asked to do some video work, I knew what I could do - and what I couldn't - so I brought in the experts. I wanted them to do the things I find very difficult/impossible, and which they make look effortless. The first project was a short film to highlight the unfair system of nursery funding in Scotland, working with the 2020 Together Group. We met to understand what they wanted to say, and how - and produced a framework script. We agreed who would be interviewed (and where) to get the material needed. I brought in Andrew Mulligan, a brilliant videographer (and top bloke) to record the interviews and gather additional material. I'd no clue how much "additional material" (B-roll, as it's known) would be needed, but Andrew was all over it - drone shots, exteriors, conversations between staff, 'walking shots' familiar from TV news and lots of images of children playing and interacting with nursery staff (all with the relevant permissions from the nurseries). I then reviewed the interviews, shaped the best bits into a script, and added in some narration. I shared this plan with Andrew and what came back really blew me away. He had edited the clips together with the B-roll in an incredibly skilful and professional way: https://lnkd.in/e-rWxYmP. 2020 Together also wanted an online 'manifesto' based on the film, so I drafted some text and asked skilled web designer Ross Russell to make it look lovely. He did! Soon after, it was time for something completely different - a short film for forestry company Scottish Woodlands Ltd at the Royal Highland Show. Again, I worked with the client to find out what they wanted and drafted a rough script. We were looking at a short film (90 seconds or so) to promote SWL's RHS presence, as sponsor of the Forestry Arena. The idea was to film on Thursday (day 1) and release first thing Friday. This time, I worked with photographer/videographer Phil Wilkinson, a former Scotsman colleague who now has his own business. I'd spoken to Phil in advance about what we were looking for in terms of interviews and general shots. There was lots to go at - pole climbing, axe throwing, chainsaw carving and more - and from the moment he arrived, he was on it, bobbing here and there, filming this and that, collecting excellent footage. We then recorded two short interviews - and again, I was wowed by the speed, skill and quality of the product. I guess the moral of the story is we can all shoot video and take pictures on our phone if we want to (or maybe run a Government department? Discuss). But if we want to make something of genuinely high quality, bring in the experts.

📢 CALLING ALL DADS (including stepdads, foster dads, dads-to-be, and father figures) 📢 Navigating the twists and turns of fatherhood can be both exhilarating and daunting, often leaving us seeking guidance and community amidst the uncertainty. Unfortunately, the “manosphere” can sometimes foster toxic ideals of stoicism and emotional detachment. That’s why I think it is incredibly important to find people championing emotional intelligence, holistic development, and camaraderie amidst the noise. I couldn’t be prouder of my friend, Collier Roberts, for doing just that Collier recently launched Elite Dads Weekly, a newsletter crafted to provide fathers with curated wisdom, fostering support, understanding, and actionable insights. It’s a platform designed to empower dads to embrace new perspectives, quell overthinking, and take meaningful action in their journey through fatherhood. If you resonate with this mission, I encourage you to subscribe via the link below, or pass it along to someone who might benefit. https://lnkd.in/e8HqSvwQ #newsletter #fatherhood #development #community
