SCG is excited to announce our 2024 Annual Conference, Better Together: Creating a Collective Legacy, which will take place on Thursday, September 26, 2024! We are entering a unique moment in Southern California. Major sporting events coming to Los Angeles, including the 2026 World Cup, the 2027 Super Bowl, and the 2028 Summer Olympics and Paralympics, are harbingers of the role our region must play as a leader working to solve complex problems from housing and homelessness to climate change and disaster mitigation. There are tremendous opportunities ahead for our region. All of us working across sectors—philanthropy, government, corporate, and community-based organizations—have vital roles to play. But we can't go about it alone. Now, more than ever, we need partnership. Because when we work together, we work better. The work that housing associations do is important. The Guinness Partnership operate in 125 local authority areas across England. They were founded in 1890 to improve people’s lives and create possibilities for them. As well as providing homes for social and affordable rent, affordable home ownership and outright sale, and homes and care services for older people; they also support their customers who need extra help. 4 years ago Sal's Shoes were approached by them. They wanted to have a chat about how they could work in partnership with us. A large company contacting a small charity. It was refreshing. We developed the concept of our Sal’s Shoes ‘shops’, where those families most in need, in some of the areas Guinness provide housing, could access much needed free footwear. Our shops are in existing community spaces. Where those families most in need are known. Where those families are already being referred, to access services already being provided by Guinness. Our shops feel like a shop, they’re set up like a shop. Families get to enjoy a shopping experience, retaining their sense of dignity and being able to exercise choice, but without having to pay for the footwear they need. Guinness’ faith in us, and their funding, allowed us to trial something we didn’t know would be successful. But we had a hunch. It was a sound one. In the last 4 years, we’ve opened 6 shops in partnership around the country. Including one in our joint venture Family Centre. Our joint success encouraged us to independently open a further 5 shops in partnership with other organisations. 4 years, 11 shops. Because Guinness went looking for the extra ways they could support the families they house. We don’t have a political purpose, but we will be telling our story at #CPC23 next week with The Centre for Social Justice. 🦁 My fellow Lions, Can we do more and better? Today, we are 1.4 million members in 47,000 clubs across 200 countries. Our impact on the world is undeniable, and our expertise is recognized by the biggest international institutions: UN, UNESCO, UNICEF, WHO, Council of Europe... In 2023 alone, 1.2 billion dollars grants were paid out, including 65 million collected by LCIF alone. We can be proud to be Lions! But can we do as well tomorrow? For some years now, we've been struggling to increase and rejuvenate our membership, particularly in historical geographical areas such as the United States and Europe. That's why, if we want to continue the legacy bequeathed by Melvin Jones and his companions, and go beyond our goals of "Mission 1.5", we need to adapt our association to the evolutions of our times, and listen more closely to our Clubs. There are many questions we need to ask ourselves, but we have three years to address them. What is our association's carbon footprint? Aren't we in danger of being blamed for it one day? Do we really need to increase membership fees to achieve quantitative or qualitative objectives? What about electronic or proxy voting, which would enable all Clubs to express their views? Should Lionism be developed in partnership with companies? How can we change the Lions Club's image to reflect new modes of expression? How can we share our altruistic ethic in an increasingly fragmented world? The list is obviously far from exhaustive. As President of our fine association, I will work with you and the Lions General Assembly on this major modernization project. Let's not be afraid of change. We are Lion! Great to see this out and where the Place Programme is headed in Phase 2! The work we do at the AHRC Place Programme responds to the high priority of ‘place’ within the UK and global policy landscapes, and the cross-sectoral initiatives focused on placemaking and redistributing resources to places most in need. Our work Phase One of the AHRC Place Programme (2021-2023) culminated in a report which argued for a people-centred, place-led approach that holds the lived, felt, geographic and economic dimensions of place together to ensure that policies and practices are developed in equitable partnerships with communities and professionals.   Phase Two of the programme runs until 2027 and a key objective is to test how the people-centred, place-led principles set out in the report can be embedded through organisational systems and policy at different scales, sectors, and governments in all four nations of the United Kingdom.
