So, you want to start your own business? A Coffee shop? To compete with those well-known chains out there like Starbucks, Pret. Are you mad? Well yes would be the likely answer. Fast forward to today and all budding entrepreneurs take note. Today Blank Street Coffee is worth well over a $100m And it all started with one tiny cart. It's a great story to tell so here it is: • It's called Blank Street Coffee • Run by co-founders Issam and Vinay • They've grown to 65 locations in 4 cities Blank Street is hijacking coffee culture with a totally new playbook. And there’s a lot to learn from how they’re doing it. 1/ Early days Rewind to 2020. Blank Street opens a coffee cart in Brooklyn. They're serving up cold brews and lattes. It's a prime location. And priced right. Drinks are 25% cheaper than Starbucks. Right away, the lines are growing. Vinay and Issam get into hustle mode. They keep the carts coming. Scattered around Brooklyn and Manhattan. And they’re brewing something big. Just how big was yet to be seen. 2/ Think small Fast forward 6 months. Blank Street opens a cafe. It's cramped at just 500 square feet. But it works. It's got earthy tones and a minimal aesthetic. Sleek fixtures and vintage lighting. Local art and chalkboard charm. But don't be fooled by the Instagram vibes. Behind the pastel green is a brilliant business machine. 3/ Smart operations Blank Street is built lean. The stores are small on purpose. They run cheap. Rent is probably $3,500 a month. Compared to $15K at a typical cafe. Then there's the tech. Locations are stacked with mobile ordering and touchless payments. Plus high-octane espresso machines pumping out 90 cups an hour. All running with just 1-2 employees. And moving fast. Blank Street went from a single store to 50. In one year. Yes that’s right, pretty impressive stuff. They’re frothing lots of lattes. And dripping with dollars. 4/ Unit economics Figures which I don’t have but the way the business is going your looking at a healthy margin. 5/ Big money Blank Street is being handcrafted by the smartest VC's in town. Tiger Global and General Catalyst are at the table. Plus the founders of Warby Parker and Allbirds. The company's raised $118M so far. Well, that’s not too shabby at all. Those tiny stores are sprawling from Boston to London. With plenty more on the way. Blank Street partners with local bakeries and artists. They use eco-friendly materials. And they pay people well. What’s not to like? A great blueprint for a great business. 4 years ago felt almost apocalyptic, but then something miraculous happened. We're almost at the 4 year anniversary of the pandemic shut down, and so much has changed in that time. At the start of it, we were all disconnected, and we also discovered quickly that digital-only connections could only go so far. What gave me a lot of hope was discovering local, small businesses on Instagram and being able to buy bread, cookies, honey, avocados, flowers, you name it, and having it safely dropped off at my doorstep. Being able to talk with friends, families, and sometimes, the owners themselves, really affirmed that real life, tangible and shared experiences is what drives a lot of us forward. In the years since, some of these businesses have gone on to open their own storefront, while others have moved onto digital platforms like Tock or Toast since their businesses have outgrown taking orders over DM. I don't know the folks behind Castiron, but I love seeing technology that gives small businesses real amplification. In the CPG world, the likes of Thingtesting, Carro - Collaborative Commerce, and Startup CPG create such unique opportunities for new products to get discovered with each focusing on wildly different approaches to get the job done (s/o to all my product folks that live/breathe JTBD). The problem of discoverability, accessibility, and amplification is far from solved. And I'm personally looking forward to seeing more miracles getting created thanks to innovative consumer tech experiences. In the meantime, time to order some treats.
Hot off the press! If you like delicious food, sending gifts, or supporting startups, check out castiron.me. Newly launched marketplace for artisan foods and custome baked goods. Yummmm.

Butternut Box | B Corp LOSES £24m - BIG LOL 😅 Private Equity Bozos are losing millions of pounds in a pretty rudimentary, easy to understand sector, dog food. As you can gather, I'm very salty. These companies play unfair battles with other who have built businesses with sweat equity instead of 2&20 fees. And we aren't even manufacturers ourselves. Butternut Box has gross margins of around 38%, and net cash of -£17m. This is UNSUSTAINABLE. And Butternut Box ins't the only one, the others mentioned in the video are also losing millions of pounds, are cannibalising each other and experience great churn. How do they survive? Printing shares and diluting shareholders. The only ones making money are Google and Facebook with these companies. 🔷 ''Blitzscaling'' only works if the business has substantial operating leverage (like SAAS), not when the Capex ought to be constantly ramped up alongside turnover. In business, the return on capital HAS to exceed the cost of capital. Who will be the first to fall? Passion Capital L Catterton Five Seasons Ventures

Don’t weight for opportunity to knock. And nope, that’s no spelling error... I sat on the idea behind the SwitchGrade (puns for buns) since 1997 but that’s not the focal point of this post. Rather it’s this seemingly pedestrian video showing the SwitchGrade toggling through its positions, shot with nary a thought, in my dining room on July 22, 2022. I’d shot countless others like it before so didn’t think too much of it. What I did know is that followers loved the #ASMR inducing resonance our product made. I was exhausted and lean on content ideas so “what the hell’d” it, scribed some words and hit send. Had no idea it would blow up to 1.8M views (and counting). Why’d I wait so long to share? Because I was waiting for a better video - Something with better lighting, a better angle maybe. Because I doubted anyone would like a raw unfinished cut shot in my dining room. Because I genuinely forgot that I had shot this video. Because life got in the way and more things fell on my plate. Because working at the speed of business doesn’t afford the luxury of mulling over overly-detailed details. #OHIO comes to mind. There are so many becauses. Each weighing down a decision you could have made in a blink days, months, years ago. So don’t weight. Get on it, get it done, get it out there. Don’t be afraid to throw things out to the universe of possibility and chance and see what goes. #dontweight #switchgrade #aenomaly #startups
