COMMUNITY HEALTH NURSING My Experience as a community health nurse As a fresh graduate in a different environment where language is a barrier, I found myself doing what I love in this community. Getting into this community, I discovered that things were different from what am used to in the communities we visited as student nurses during our posting while in school. I discovered that apart from me being a volunteer nurse and other student nurses on posting [sometimes] there are just two nurses on the ward one is called the IN-CHARGE which is always around once in a while due to other duties and the other nurse is always in the family planning department. I discovered that every other person working there are community health worker, which is now referred to as NURSES. LIKE HOW? And every male worker is regarded as DOCTORS. How is that even possible? To my understanding nurses are meant to be the ones to diagnose a patient in the community when did it become the work of others aside from the doctors, why then do we have nursing diagnoses? Some of these workers are CHEW, Pharmacist, and Lab technicians. So because we all use scrub or white sometimes does not make our role in the hospitals or communities the same. Licensed Practical Nurse Pay in the Great Lakes Region: Wages in Illinois and Michigan run higher than the national average, according to recently published employment data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). As of May 2022, there were more than 632,000 licensed practical nurses (LPNs) employed in the United States. Also known as licensed vocational nurses (LVNs) in some parts of the country, licensed practical nurses make up one of the largest healthcare occupations in the U.S. Approximately 83,900 of those licensed practical nursing jobs were in the five-state Great Lakes region of the country. Less than 10% of nurses in the US are African American. That means only 1 out of 10 nurses would be African American. Out of 100 employed nurses, only 10 would be African American. It raises the question of how many nurses of color were terminated compared to non-minority nurses? Was patient safety compromised, or was there a bias? I remembered being a shapeshifter while I was working as a nurse in a pediatric hospital years ago. In a span of a week, I became a zombie, then a bedside nurse, then a nurse educator, then a worm. Nurses are as fluid as water, shapeshifting when the situation calls for it. They wear many hats, often beyond their job descriptions. In a single shift or a single day, they can be electricians, plumbers, therapists, counselors, chefs, hairdressers, bartenders, entertainers – all while ensuring their patients receive the best care possible. This is why it's so important to take care of our nurses. They do so much, often beyond what is asked of them. In today’s healthcare landscape, let’s continue advocating for them through: 👉🏼Fair compensation - Nurses deserve wages that reflect their dedication and the multifaceted roles they play. 👉🏼Mental health support - Access to mental health resources and regular check-ins to support their well-being. 👉🏼Adequate staffing - Ensuring nurse-to-patient ratios that allow for safe and effective care. 👉🏼Professional development - Opportunities for continuous learning and career advancement. 👉🏼Recognition and respect - Valuing and acknowledging the hard work and sacrifices nurses make daily. 👉🏼Research and policy development - Investing in research to identify best practices and policy changes that support nursing roles and improve working conditions. FIRST AID/ BLS / ACLS First Aid + Basic Life Support (BLS) + Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support ( ACLS) should be accredited into Nursing College Curriculum. Nurses are the first responders always whether it be Life threatening or a stable case. Some are running the rural / urban clinics. In an emergency, a Nurse can't stand there watching and waiting for a BLS/ACLS trained health professional to arrive. Saving a Life is every Health Workers Duty of Care....

The Great Plains region is a WEAK one for licensed practical nurse pay, with annual mean wage levels in all states in the region falling below the national average for all LPNs and LVNs. Moreover, two states in the region, Missouri and South Dakota, were among the ten worst states in the nation for licensed practical nurse annual mean wage levels. DYK: By 2026, the Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts a shortage of over 1 million nurses in the U.S. This shortage could exacerbate challenges hospitals currently face in peds nurse education including: ➡️ Increased hiring of international staff and traveling nurses. ➡️ Communication barriers. ➡️ Novice nurses feeling “rushed” to the bedside and risking burnout. ➡️ Obstacles to patient-centered care and communication. This shift in the workforce, changing educational practices, and new employees' learning preferences will require educators and employers to adjust their onboarding and training strategies. Additional layers of education and team building will be needed to create cohesive, competent teams that provide high-quality patient care. Things are different when applying for remote and non-bedside nursing jobs (just ask any nurse who’s in it right now) and nothing is wrong with you or your experience if you’re having a hard time getting responses to your applications. Applying to these roles is closer to what the rest of corporate America is experiencing at this moment - lots of people looking with low inventory. 👀 Nurses who are in it or have landed a remote nursing job, what advice would you give those feeling discouraged in their search?

I have nothing but respect for Nurses, but one thing I have noticed that has been incredibly detrimental to health care in Oregon and the staffing crisis is the disproportionate amount of health care roles in Oregon that requiring a nursing background when a nursing background has little to nothing to do with the job description. I am all for nurses branching out and broadening their career. But “Nurse”, “RN”, and “BSN” tend to be catch all terms for medical experience and create a barrier that is neither effective or intelligent. Example: recently applied for a trauma educator role. Are there loads of qualified nurses? Of course. Am I arguably way more qualified than most of them? Absolutely. Not just from experience, but also from licensure, instructor qualifications, and traditional education. But my application was immediately rejected for not meeting the required qualifications. Because I am not an RN. I love my nurses… but ya’ll need to tell your unions to simmer down with what they are pushing, and demand some of these employers educate themselves a bit more about licensure and background.
