Physical Therapist, Educator, Researcher

Physical Therapy is a phenomenal profession. To the PTs with a negative attitude in the Facebook PT chat rooms, the grass is not greener. Much prefer the interactions on LinkedIn. Far more positive. #physicaltherapy #physiotherapy #healthcare #careercounseling

Diminishing reimbursement, prevalent corporate oversight and implementation of traditional business practice, fewer benefits, lower compensation, less therapeutic working environments…I could go on but these are just some of the things that make me consider changes in career, or at least career focus. I am incredibly well educated and trained, with an incredible depth and breadth of experience. If it is possible to compare apples to oranges, I have friends with less training and experience in their chosen professions making substantially more income and overall benefits, as well as enjoying an enviably work to life balance. I have dedicated myself to the betterment of other people’s lives and feel I have little to show for it. Maybe this is too personal but honest. I am extremely proud of what I have to offer but less appreciative of what I receive in return. Maybe that is too selfish🤷🏼♂️

#3!? That’s shocking. I’d be curious to see if that ranking would remain the same based on number of years of practice. I’m grateful to have been able to pivot back into sports and love what I do! But when working in traditional healthcare, I was considering leaving the profession entirely last year. Coming back to this thread to find out where all the happy PTs work should I need to pivot again in the future =)

I’m actually too tired from today’s circus to reply to this post with effort. I still love my profession but cannot wait to leave it. We are nothing but chattel for orthopedic surgeons. And we have zero involvement in fee structure with our payors. Don’t get me started on how useless the PT Association is in assisting us with advocating for our profession. We’ve been head under water for 20+ years.

It "depends". The beauty is that the experience you want within Physical Therapy is out there. If you want a $130,000+ paying job, they exist. If you want a 4x10 or 3x12 schedule, they exist. You may need to break out of your comfort zone to find and experience these things but they are out there.

I was just out with 8 former classmates only two of us are still PTs. The other 6 reported higher wages and a better quality of life. The science of this profession is phenomenal, but there are major issues that cannot be ignored. They literally joke with me about still being a physical therapist because for them the grass is much greener. However, on a brighter note the APTA has had a lot of wins lately, and we seem to be building momentum in the right direction. I’m going to continue to ride it out, but the only thing keeping me in the profession is feeling good about what I do.

What are people saying on FB? I got tossed out of those groups years ago for challenging SI Jt conventional wisdom and trying to post peer review papers I wrote. Bad look for PT that they won’t entertain new understandings and accept posts of peer reviewed papers.

Compensation and diminishment of reimbursement needs to be talked about and addressed if we want to continue to show we are a serious field in Healthcare

Seems like LinkedIn PTs are much more invested in the career & find more fulfillment in the profession!
