The CaixaForum in Valencia is a space dedicated to spreading culture in the widest sense of the word (history, art, science and technology) through exhibitions and various types of other events. “Paradoxically, the most surprising CaixaForum is the one that is hidden, the one that will least modify the city in which it is constructed. Maybe it is also the one that will make it dream even more", Anatxu Zabalbeascoa, El País. The new design by Enric (arquitecto) ruiz geli and the Cloud 9 studio has conceived the 6500 m² exhibition space, which is surrounded by water, as a living organism within which different elements can be found. The "cells" of this organism are made up of two exhibition halls, an auditorium with seating for 300 people, a bookshop and a restaurant. Mapei was part of this project as one of our adhesive systems was employed to create a colourful ceramic covering. HATERS GONNA -- Before completion for the 1899 World’s Fair - the Eiffel Tower project was treated by some as an industrialist “Tower of Babel” that was anti-ethical to French taste and culture. A group of prominent French artists published an open letter titled ‘Artists against the Eiffel Tower’ featured on the front page of Parisian Newspaper ‘Les Temps.’ The letter - signed by some of the greatest creative minds in France - implored that the project “menaced French art and history”, calling the tower a "useless and monstrous" structure, which would "irreparably disfigure and dishonour" Paris. Also -- “dizzyingly ridiculous tower”, leaving all Parisian architecture "humiliated" and "dwarfed" in the "shadow of this odious column of bolted sheet metal", “industrial vandalism”, a “stupefying dream” from the "grotesque and mercantile imagination of a machine-maker” aka Gustave Eiffel himself. What makes the strong opposition to Eiffel Tower even more striking and amusing is that the whole thing was only meant to be temporary - after 20 years it was due to be deconstructed on December 31, 1909. • The Eiffel Tower was imagined as a 'short-term' project. • It's haters didn't want it to live at all, and tried to block construction. • It the end, it lived, and thrived well beyond it's original purpose and lifespan. • From 'pop-up concept' to 'permanent irreplaceable icon' status.
