New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) Releases Final New York State Solid Waste Management Plan DEC announced the finalization of the 2023-2032 New York State Solid Waste Management Plan, a milestone in the State’s ongoing efforts to ensure New York is at the forefront of rethinking waste. The New York State Solid Waste Management Plan: Building the Circular Economy through Sustainable Materials Management is a 10-year plan that describes actions to reduce the climate impact of solid waste and provides direction for New York's waste reduction, reuse, recycling, collection, transportation, and disposal investments, policies, and practices over the next decade. To protect communities and mitigate the effects of climate change, the New York State Solid Waste Management Plan builds upon sustained efforts to reduce waste and advance the state’s transition to a circular economy, helping to change New Yorkers’ understanding of waste and their relationship to it. This Plan is intended to guide actions over the next decade, from the beginning of 2023 to the end of 2032, and builds upon the State’s 2010 Beyond Waste Plan. The Plan sets forth six major Focus Areas with goals and action items to move towards a circular economy and to move the materials management industry forward in New York State: • Waste Reduction and Reuse; • Recycling and Recycling Market Development and Resiliency; • Product Stewardship and Extended Producer Responsibility; • Organics Reduction and Recycling; • Toxics in Products; • Advanced Design and Operation of Solid Waste Management Facilities and Related Activities. Re:Source, LLC, located in Marion County, Oregon, expanded in 2018 and is projected to receive 300,000 tons of waste in 2024, redirecting 75,000 tons away from landfills. The facility is almost entirely automated, showcasing the industry's technological advancement. 👷♂️ 𝗙𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗢𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗹𝗼𝗼𝗸𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗔𝗽𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗧𝗼𝗱𝗮𝘆: 🙈 Waste management professionals are often overlooked and undervalued. 𝗙𝘂𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲: 👏 Honor them as essential workers who are the backbone of our clean and healthy communities. During the COVID-19 pandemic and the Western Oregon fires of 2020, ensuring public health and safety even in the toughest times, all the while being the eyes and ears of our neighborhoods when most of us are still sleeping. 💡 𝗙𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗢𝗯𝘀𝗼𝗹𝗲𝘁𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗜𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗧𝗼𝗱𝗮𝘆: 🕰️ The industry is viewed as outdated and low-tech. 𝗙𝘂𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲: 🚀 We want to highlight its embrace of cutting-edge technology and innovative practices that transform waste into valuable resources and enhance efficiency. Over the past 20 years, the industry has transitioned to fully automated trucks. Previously, trucks required a second employee to get off and manually throw trash into the truck. This automation has drastically increased safety, convenience, and efficiency, as drivers now operate solely from within the vehicle. 🌟 𝗙𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗡𝘂𝗶𝘀𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗡𝗲𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗧𝗼𝗱𝗮𝘆: 😒 Waste management is seen as a necessary nuisance. 𝗙𝘂𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲: 💪 We want to celebrate it as the backbone of thriving communities, preventing disease, protecting wildlife, and significantly enhancing quality of life. Coffin Butte Landfill, located in Benton County, Oregon, safely and environmentally handles our waste and collects enough gas to generate electricity equivalent to powering the City of Corvallis for three months. It’s time to change the narrative and give the industry the respect it deserves. 𝗙𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘀𝗵 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗻𝘆 𝘁𝗼 𝗲𝗻𝘃𝗶𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝘀𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗻𝗲𝗿.
