Hello friends, scientists and communicators! Here is a little #mondaymotivation for you all. At CSIRO Publishing I run so many workshops and very frequently hear participants say "my English isn't good enough for academic writing" or "I'm not confident with my English." I have a confession: Despite teaching writing for a living, good spelling and grammar don't come easily to me and I've had to put in the practice. In fact the post I'm sharing comes from someone who was extremely patient with my early academic writing efforts and personally inspires me. Dr Michael Seery shares a mural from their workplace at the Centre for Academic Language and Develop at the University of Bristol: "Academic Language is no one's mother tongue". I would like to add that no one is born a good writer - there are just people that have had more practice at it! I hope this inspires you today to put aside your worries about being a "good writer", sit down and write for 15 minutes and practice writing some words on a page. I got the grand tour today at Schwarz Partners, LP by the one and only Sue Seitz, CPA. The innovations they’ve implemented into their growing company are a testament to their dedication to their workforce. And some corporate structures are more complex than others - this one indeed has some complexities to it! 😉 But their set up - from policies to benefits and everything in between - has been intentionally and thoughtfully designed to prioritize their very diverse workforce. It’s a big job. And Sue works with the precision and execution of someone who believes good enough isn’t good enough. It’s companies like this that will always be early adopters of new technologies and improvements. I knew from our previous Zoom calls that they had a great team of problem solvers, determined to making an impact. ✨ Wrapping up the year with immense gratitude and pride! This year has been one of growth, resilience, and rediscovery. After navigating the challenges brought on by COVID and the ups and downs of the job industry, I’m thrilled to say I’ve found my place with the incredible Swarm Rewards team. It’s an absolute privilege to work alongside such talented and forward-thinking individuals. A team that not only strives for excellence but also values innovation, collaboration, and the voices of every member. Here, my ideas are not just heard—they’re embraced and transformed into action. I’ll admit that sales aren’t always easy, especially for someone who used to shy away from phone calls. But when you believe wholeheartedly in your product, everything changes. Every year is a journey. This one? It stretched us, challenged us, but it also brought fun, fulfillment, and some of our best work to date. Here we are: strong, healthy, ready for growth ahead. Of course, we faced challenges, but we always reminded ourselves that In the end, it’s quite simple: create extraordinary work, with a team that finds meaning in what they do, for clients who trust us to bring their vision to life. None of this happens without our team at Verve I United Playgrounds. Their energy, grit, and resilience are nothing short of inspiring. Together, we’ve grown stronger, taken bold steps, and proven that even in tough times, we rise. And of course, our incredible clients. Every project is a partnership. Your trust and courage fuels everything we do, year after year. For that, we’re endlessly grateful. Finally, to our colleagues at United Playgrounds: together, we’re building something remarkable. HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO US... This week has been a pretty big week for me. On Monday I turned 40 and today, our little business, Brightside Collective turned 1. When we started Brightside Collective, we had big dreams and even bigger goals. I’m proud to say that not only did we hit every milestone we set out to achieve this year, but we also built something really special. None of this would have been possible without the support of everyone around us. We're so lucky to be surrounded by so many amazing people... Thank you for trusting us, working with us, and believing in what we’re building. We’re excited to meet even more of you next year and continue creating great things together. As I reflect on the past year, here are a few lessons I’ve learned along the way: 1.Constantly evolve. Don’t settle for “good enough.” Keep looking for ways to improve, refine, and grow. The world moves fast, and staying ahead means adapting faster. 2. Don’t sit still. Momentum is everything. Keep taking action, even if it’s imperfect, because progress beats perfection every time. 3. Don’t be afraid to change quickly. What works today might not work tomorrow. Be brave enough to pivot, innovate, and embrace change. 4. Back yourself and your ideas. Trust your instincts. Confidence in your vision is the foundation for everything else. 5. Solve problems quickly. Challenges will come, but your response matters more. Tackle problems head on and quickly. Finally, I want to take a moment to thank my incredible business partner, Eron. Despite having one of the toughest years of her life, she’s been a rock, a constant source of strength, resilience, and brilliance. I couldn’t ask for a better teammate on this journey, and I’m endlessly grateful for her. Here’s to a year of challenges overcome, milestones achieved, and lessons learned. And here’s to the future.
