An attorney has passed the bar and is licensed to represent clients in court, while a lawyer might have the same legal training but hasn’t been admitted to practice law. The distinction dates back to English common law, where terms like “barrister” and “solicitor” had specific roles. Over time, these roles blurred—especially in the U.S.—but the nuances remain important in some jurisdictions. Still, most judges and legal professionals use the terms interchangeably. “Among laypeople, I don’t think anyone even cares,” says attorney Paul Koenigsberg.
