Now 65 years after the publishing of the seminal book, The Vegetation of Wisconsin (Curtis, 1959), ecologists are continuing to learn and refine concepts on natural communities. Take, for example, oak woodland, in some ways related to oak opening and oak forests, but sufficiently distinctive as to warrant classification as a unique community. Oak woodlands are special places – a contiguous cover of low-stature herbaceous vegetation, formed in dappled light underneath a moderately open canopy of upward spreading oak branches. They are home to high priority conservation targets like the red-headed woodpecker. Oak woodlands that retain a high degree of ecological integrity are exceedingly rare today in Wisconsin and adjoining states. Degraded but recoverable areas remain - these areas urgently require ecological stewardship, like very frequent dormant season burns and tree thinning. Practitioners need to know what clues to look for to be confident that oak woodland is a suitable conservation target and to prioritize recovery efforts. A new coarse-level monitoring protocol published by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources and various partners provides a streamlined method to evaluate oak woodlands as a critical first step towards protection and recovery (Carter et al., 2023).

Today marks the 10 year anniversary of my tenure with the Delaware River Basin Commission (DRBC). It is fitting that I have the opportunity to share with you a snapshot of our work in the newly released 2023 annual report of the DRBC. This year’s annual report once again highlights the mission and results of the DRBC to manage, protect and improve the water resources of the Delaware River Basin for the benefit of over 14 million people in four states. The report will take you on a journey from the headwaters to the ocean and highlights the diversity of the basin along the main stem Delaware River; the critical work being performed throughout the basin; and some of the continuing water resources management challenges. https://lnkd.in/dE_ZEcU
