In England, BNG is mandatory under Schedule 7A of the Town and Country Planning Act 1990 (as inserted by Schedule 14 of the Environment Act 2021). Developers must deliver a BNG of 10%. These strips of land hold immense potential for promoting biodiversity and environmental conservation. Did you know the UK has about 400,000 hectares of roadside verges? 😲 Traditionally, they're just buffers with little ecological value due to frequent mowing. Yet, there's a growing push for Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG), aiming for overall biodiversity increase in development projects. Is 30x30 an effective conservation goal, or just a lofty catchphrase? Two years ago, nearly every country on Earth signed on to the most ambitious plan ever to reverse nature loss — a sweeping framework made up of 23 targets and an unprecedented goal: conserving 30% of all lands and seas by 2030. While so many countries signed on to 30x30, only about a third of countries have submitted plans clearly indicating how their national plans meet specific targets. That leaves over 100 countries behind the November 2024 deadline to finalize their biodiversity plans. 30x30 is an ambitious target. Protected areas are one of the most effective ways to conserve biodiversity and they remain a cornerstone of biodiversity conservation strategies. At COP16, Conservation International will be advocating for a provision that would give clear guidance to governments, businesses organizations and others on identifying and repurposing subsidies for industries that drive nature loss. #30x30 #BiodiversityMatters #COP16 #ConservationFinance

„Climate change is about how we live in the future. Species extinction is about whether we survive as humanity," says Katrin Böhning-Gaese, Director at the Senckenberg Biodiversity and Climate Research Center in Frankfurt am Main. 🌎 The #biodiversity crisis is considered one of the key global problems. The extinction of species is accelerating the #climatecrisis and vice versa. 🐝 Every day, up to 150 animal and plant species disappear worldwide because ecosystems are being destroyed. We are thus losing our most important allies in the fight against the climate crisis and risking the security of our livelihoods. ➡️ A new meta-study in the journal "Science" reports that most nature conservation measures worldwide actually have a positive impact on biodiversity. But however, the efforts made so far are far from sufficient. ➡️ The most effective measures include conservation efforts in agriculture - but yesterday's decision in the EU Parliament has exactly the opposite effect. ➡️ The fact is that agriculture must become more sustainable - more space for nature, less agrochemicals! ➡️ It is also clear that politicians cannot shirk their responsibility and must take action - worldwide: protected areas must be expanded and forests and oceans protected! 💥 The good news is that it is not too late to stop the extinction of species. However, this requires real political will (without lobbying and a focus on election campaign votes) and international cooperation. The largest conservation impacts were: ...the eradication, control, and management of Invasive Alien Species ...actions to reduce habitat loss and degradation, sustainable management of ecosystems, ...and protected areas In the few cases where conservation didn't work, it was down to unintended consequences (eg removal of invasive species using pesticides) or poor enforcement and funding. Further highlighting the need for "evidence-based interventions alongside effective monitoring, so that negative responses can be quickly detected and conservation measures adjusted accordingly." 🌍 COP16 Begins: A Crucial Moment for Amazon Conservation As the UN Biodiversity Conference (#COP16) kicks off, the spotlight is on the Amazon—an ecosystem at a tipping point. Wageningen University & Research advocates for two key strategies to reverse biodiversity loss: integrating Indigenous knowledge and promoting a sustainable bioeconomy through science and innovation.
