Just sat in on a deep dive on one of ClimatePartner Impact's fantastic, high quality climate projects that is extremely close to home for me. I was born in South Africa, and most of my extended family still live there. Growing up in Rustenburg (aka the boonies), I remember running on giant anthills and termite mounds, and going out to the Bush often to see elephants, zebra, giraffes…animals others only dream of seeing.   As I got older, I became more aware of how astounding the biodiversity of Africa is, and how scared I am that the climate crisis poses a threat to everything I love back home. Since 1990, the national average temperature has increased twice as fast as global temperatures, and extreme weather events such as heatwaves, droughts, and brutal storms have increased in intensity and frequency, tipping ecosystems into chaos.   When people play devil's advocate and insist that the world will just balance itself out, my fear and pain is distilled into one thought, "humans may find a way to survive and endure, but what about the elephants?"   Our actions as a global population in creating and ignoring the climate crisis effect so much more than what we see around us. By continuing with 'business-as-usual' in our governments, companies and individual day-to-day lives, we are creating consequences that are so far-reaching and devastating. If unchecked, the negative effects of our activities on nature could lead to a loss of almost 50% of species from the world. We are the authors of a mass extinction on planet earth.   That's why it is so important to enact change in every possible way, both where we live, and where we are having the most destructive effects.
